I remember seeing a few discussions a while back about people wondering what we are and are not allowed to take photos of. Hope this helps some of you, I found this when browsing Digital Photography School today.

@byrdlip I have been stopped or challenged twice recently, both times with no human subject, but both times on private property. (The second time was outside on the grounds of a hospital; his justification was HIPAA.)

@rhoing - heh. HIPAA protects a persons medical record and payment history. A photo of someone outside a hospital doesn't reveal either, so I don't see how you can argue that it's protected by HIPAA. But he could just say that it's private property and the hospital hates photographers. That argument would hold up in court.

@sudweeks The "low-level security" dude in the golf cart had *no* "bedside manner," so it was pointless to argue with him. Besides, in the end I didn't even take any photos; the one I had in mind didn't look good enough through the lens anyway.
