Have you noticed that some choices hang on through many changes and others are there for just a little while? Also curious about the term "popular" since some of them don't seem to have been viewed very many times. Still trying to figure out those monkeys!
Monkeys are monkeys....they play! Sometimes they like to play a lot with one or two images, sometimes they become bored more easily and switch quickly from picture to picture....probably depends on the kind of bananas they've had for breakfast! "Monkey do as monkey does." Enjoy the randomness of it all.....who'd want to be predictable? Certainly not monkeys!
I read on another thread that its done via software creating the choices from stats off the website consisting of views, comments and pics made as favorites. But yea I see your point, I'm not sure as I've seen a few with little views or comments. Who knows!
thats funny. I didn't even know what the popular page was until now. But i see your point. There's this one pic that no matter how many times you click shuffle it remains. I finally clicked to view it and saw the picture has only been viewed 6 times with no comments or favs. We all seen photos that have been viewed hundreds of times that are not there. I might be wrong but it does say "recently" popular. maybe it really means recently viewed. I think it might just be photos that have been view in the last.. IDK 5 mins or so..maybe..
Yea I'm with Nikki. I think that's what it is....the ones that were viewed last. Because I will go searching around the site, viewing photos, commenting...favoriting...exploring the many wonderful talents of all these 365ers!!...........then I'll visit the popular page. and liike 4 or 5 of the ones I had JUST commented on or viewed are there. so maybe that's it???
but if not...like Elizabeth said...monkeys are random. ;)
I love the Popular page. It's allowed me to meet so many fabulous photographers and exposed me to people/pics I wouldn't normally get a chance to see. There's so much talent here... it's both inspiring and astounding!
And like Weslyn, I love seeing one of my pics on that page. It makes my day!
The problem with having a "pure" popular page would be that the only photos you'd ever see on it would be those from people who already have tonnes of followers, who get the most views. It'd be pretty useless, making the community even more heavily skewed. Most obvious way of solving that would be to include recently added stuff in there too, so people with not many followers have a chance at a bit of exposure, and the community gets to see more stuff than just the same old people.
You have all made good observations. I think the problem would be resolved if the name of the page were changed from "popular" to something like "random delights". Then we wouldn't have to wonder how the pictures got selected and we could just enjoy them no matter how many comments and visits they actually got.
Isn't that what "popular" means? The most viewed. If someone is being followed by many people, it is because their images draw the viewer. Someone who is consistently on the popular page, therefore, consistently draws the most viewers.
I love to discover new people through scrolling through the images of the day or by tags. When I use the browse tag, the page defaults to latest posted. I've discovered interesting images there, too. If I view their page, I leave a fave. If a wander through their calendar shows a lot of images that appeal to me, then I'll comment and follow them... thus making them more popular. That seems right to me.
I can't seem to outguess the choices. I feel it is an honor to make that page and felt a bit disheartened when someone posted a 'stock' photo not only making the Popular page, but also the Home Page...
OOO I love Craigs idea that way I might get to view albums I never would otherwise. With everyone on different time zones I keep stumbling on the same people I post at about the same time as and I dont have time to go back on all the 'day' pages which I presume would show me what else has been posted in the last 24 hrs. Or maybe an entirely random page with randomly generated pics from the last 24hrs?
how do you know if yours has been on the popular page??? I'm pretty sure I haven't as I have only 5 followers, but it would be pretty cool... famous for a few seconds, in this small world :)
I must say - after speaking to Ross in person on Saturday I can finally spill the beans on how this works!
Each time a new photo gets uploaded, the server sends a message to Ross' mac, which then plays an alarm sound out of his back garden, really loud. It's like a high pitched buzz, and it attracts all the local bees to his garden, whereupon they start collecting honey from his amazing array of flowerbeds. While they're doing this, the photo is projected onto the rear wall of his house really large so the bees can see it. It turns out bees will go for different colour flowers based on how much they like what they're looking at at the time, so the weight of the bees on the flowers is detected via pressure sensors, and this data is collated and if enough of them like the photo, it goes into the popular page.
And there was me thinking it'd be complicated. Cuhh!
I think the POPULAR page should be renamed to LAUREN's shot of the Day. Her work is on it daily with a couple other photographs to help compliment her photo.
just messin. :P

I've had photos on the popular page and only one or two views.
