I've heard so much good about this lens, but I'm wondering if anyone who owns it (Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II) would mind sharing what THEIR opinion/tips/tricks/etc. with it is?
Thanks a bunch in advance
I love it. Most (practically all) of my photos since Christmas have been taken with it. At times, it can be hard to focus, but you get used to it quickly. On autofocus, it focuses fast and is all around wonderful in low light. I would definitely recommend it.
For the money, it is great. It does have a higher minimum focal distance than the other lenses I use so that throws me off when I switch back to the 50 and it is kind of loud but still a great deal for $100. Oh, and it's super light. It feels like you're not carrying anything at all.
I agree that for the money it is a great buy- in fact my nifty 50 is the first lens I purchased after getting my camera and it has been wonderful. It is true that it can be slow to focus and not as smooth as some more $$$ lens, but it takes nice crisp shots. I say go for it:)
@youthful So glad you asked this question, because I too have been considering this lens since I've heard rave reviews and the price is definitely right!
Awesome Lens, almost never leaves my Canon 7D, fast, sharp, light, but is a little noisey when it focuses, but its a little price to pay for such a awesome lens for $100!
Love it! It's great for low light and soooo much better than my kit lens. The only thing is that you have to have some space to use it, so it's not ideal if you are in a small space.
@youthful@triptych_angel@annielf I planned to buy the f1.8 too, went to 2 camera shops and they gave me the same opinion. It's very good for the price but if I can stretch a little my budget for the f1.4, they recommend that I'll buy the latter instead. A pro photog friend told me the same, so decided to go for the f1.4. Unfortunately, it's been a month now and the lens hasn't arrived yet. *sigh*
I love mine and it is always on my camera (doesn't help that my kit lens is currently broken). All my photos in my project have been taken with it. For the cost you can't go wrong.
I'm also thinking of buying the f1.8. Thanks for putting this up.
In some reviews, it says that its easy to brake. Is that true? To those who have the lens how long since first use it? How much is the f1.4??
it is fantastic for the money and it is light and easy to carry about. I suppose it is a cheaper build quality than other lenses and it probably would break quite easily if dropped or knocked but then most lenses would not stand up to that kind of treatment no matter how well they are built.
Well worth buying especially if you have budget constraints :)
I did end up buying the 1.8. It is a beautiful lens - shoots wonderfully in low light, shoots fast, lovely DOF. I don't keep it on as my standard lens since I have a hard time shooting with a fixed focus (I like having options, and I like to do candid photos so it's easier to do with a range), but it is sooo nice to shoot with. Definitely can't go wrong with buying it, especially the price.
I believe a 50mm lens is a must-have and the low cost of the nifty 50 f/1.8 makes it a no brainer. I actually have the 50mm f/1.4 and I don't regret spending $325 for it, but if your budget is tight, get the 1.8. Everyone I know who has it, loves it.
