Missing camera information

March 27th, 2011
Today I uploaded two different photos. They were both taking within 15-20 mins of each other, using the same camera, and all data was uploaded to my pc at the same time.
On the first photo, the camera information is missing, where as on the second photo the camera information is present. Can someone please explain why the camera information is missing on the first please?

Something must have 'edited' the photo for some reason. Are they vastly different in size? Do you shoot raw or jpeg?
March 27th, 2011
@ukcam Camilo, they must be about the same size, and they are both jpeg. The only difference I can think of is the boarder around the first image. Would placing a boarder remove the camera information? Other than that they are both sooc and unprocessed, only adding my name to each.

I noticed I loose my information when I resize and add my watermark. Course I shoot in RAW so my images are HUGE. I kinda wish it didn't do that because I like to see the information as well on here.

the border has stripped away the metadata because its not seeing the jpeg as it was originally shot it happens with my work because i place them on to white borders for printing :)

@gagaburree @eiskalt Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.. Another one of life's little mysteries is solved :o)

Adding a border will not necessarily strip out EXIF data - I've added many a border without losing the EXIF data. It's likely to be something else.

What software are you using to add the border and how are you saving it? For example, in PhotoShop you have both File...Save As and Save for Web and Devices... when saving out as a JPEG.

thats good to know carl i always do it in photoshop CS5 and save as JPEG and loses it but maybe thats because i copy the image onto a blank new canvas and save from there ??

It has happened to me sometimes if I flip between processing applications while deciding which to use; it seems that some of them don't pass it on and collages never do.
March 27th, 2011
Interesting Carl, I have saved it as a jpeg, and the boarder was done in Photoshop.. You guys are far more experienced with the editing programmes than I am.
March 27th, 2011
@sprogz Would it have anything to do with setting it onto a black boarder, which in fact is like a black page behind it rather than a frame?
March 27th, 2011
i think thats what its doing chell i paste my photograph onto a new blank white canvas then flatten the layers so i think its seeing it as a completly new image :)
March 27th, 2011
@wordpixman @gagaburree Gav, if it was the layering, it would happen when cloning images.. but when cloning it does not happen. So I think its trying to read the boarder / canvas information and not the photo's information.. dont know if I am making sense here?
March 27th, 2011
hmmmmm its got me puzzled then because i really want to keep my metadata but like all my work to be borderd on white canvas think i may have to drop into an Adobe forum xx

when every i use any layers in photoshop i always loose the details . Sux in a way but im use to it now.

@michelleyoung I have posted one today in my unclassified album, with a lot of processing (in Picnik!) and a border, and the exif data has been fully prerserved, so the border is not causing a problem. I am pretty sure @gagaburree is correct saying that it usually happens with what appears to be a completely new image. (I don't use Photoshop by the way).

I think if you're adding layers to the original shot, it'll (PS) keep the EXIF data because it is essentially the same image. If you copy/paste to another, new PS image you'll lose the EXIF data.

Best bet, to stay safe is just to copy the image in Windows/Mac first and edit that image in PS. Should keep the EXIF AND prevent you destroying the original.
March 27th, 2011
@liipgloss Using layers should not lose EXIF in PS if you're adding them to the original, camera JPEG or RAW. Also, in PS CS5 at least, when you choose File...Save for Web & Devices pay close attention to the Metadata picklist which has options for None, Copyright, Copyright and Contact Info, All Except Camera Info, and All. I'm pretty sure only "All" saves the EXIF info to the JPEG.

Interesting stuff! I suppose it makes sense that apps can choose whether or not to preserve data. It doesn't mean they will always do what you expect :)
March 27th, 2011
@michelleyoung ok IF u copy and pasted your photo onto a black page to use as the border it will olose the info .....

this is because when u save u are saving the info of the main image , if u copy and pasted your photo onto a black background to create the border the main image is classed as the black background therefore your info is lost :)

hope that explains it easily :)
March 27th, 2011
when i look through my own work i can tell straight away the bigger edits as the info no longer shows :)

I think @sprogz Carl has it exactly right. Adding layers in PS to the original image (for a border or for your name) will not destroy the metadata.

I use PS7 and before uploading, I *always* resize (Image > Image Size...) and I frequently crop (Image > Canvas Size...). Then I add a layer with my name and none of this ever destroys the metadata.

Even when I created a blue door image · http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2011-03-23 · with just the door in color, if I started with the original image, gray-scaled it then added a transparent layer with just the blue door (from an image created by: select door, Invert selection, delete, save-as-a-new-file), the metadata was preserved.

If you use "Save For Web" in photoshop, EXIF will get stripped. It will NOT get stripped if you use "Save As" in photoshop. The steps you take for editing do not affect EXIF, it's all about how you save it. Also many online photo hosting sites will strip the data, sometimes automatically (Facebook), or dependent on your settings (Flickr)
