Shoot in Raw if u can ... let contrast and clarity and a little saturation become a really good friend in editing.
Ive never used picnik so i cant comment but another free one i use sometimes is photoscape , has alot of cool layers which are easy to apply.
And play around with cropping , can make the most boring photo very interesting.

good luck .

@liipgloss can you shoot Raw on point and shoots? and if so what does it achieve?

Picnik seems to be a common one, but for basic edits I used Picasa for the longest time-still do for SOME things. It lets you crop, do B&W and sepia, as well as a few other things. Very basic but I used it up until this year :)

@sonialast It depends on your camera. Some point and shoots have the ability. RAW will give you greater control over the way the photo looks after post processing. It's uncompressed data. As opposed to shooting in jpgs where the camera determines how that photo should look and compresses the information it recorded when you pressed the shutter.

If you are new to editing just have a play with picnik. It's what I use as I find photoshop totally confusing and need to get some lessons before I can tackle it

In my workflow, cropping is the first item on the list. This helps me focus and decide on what adjustments will be needed.

@jo365
Wanted to hip u to an online video site that has taught me a TON in a very short period of time.
www.lynda.com
For about $25.00 a month they give you online video tuturials on EVERY subject you could imagine with regards to photography and editing in all Adobe products. Watch as many as you can, take notes, and then discontinue your membership as you wish! Best part...u never have to leave your own couch/bed/office, etc!

@tolpol Awesome... any clues? i've been having a look for the manual no luck! where might i find the option to change it?

I recommend PhotoScene. It's a free program that you download to your computer. I use it, in conjunction with Photoshop and love it.

Picasa for the simple edits and Picnik for the more advanced stuff works great for me!
