Considering Sony Alpha

April 16th, 2011
I'm quickly outgrowing the capabilities of my p&s. I don't have a lot of money but I could afford the Sony Alpha A290L and maybe a macro lense. I know this isn't a high end camera. Is it worth the money. If I can't afford more, should I just forget it? Can any of you tell me the advantages and disadvantages of the Sony Alpha?

I have a sony a300 and I love mine. What I love about my camera I can use minolta lenses too. I think mine takes pretty good photos. There are a few people that I follow that have one and they seem to love theirs too.

Pentax are worth considering as well when on a budget. I got a KX for £400 just before Christmas with a 18-55 and a 50-200 lens. I also used to use pentax slr so had some other bits as well.

Hope this helps and doesn't cause more confusion.

I'm using an Alpha A390 which I love and have heard very good things about the entire range from those who use them. You can use old minolta-konica a-mount lenses on them, and the quality of the images is very good. Sony do make the sensors for a lot of the other camera makes too so I've heard, so yeah, I'd recommend them heartily, though the Sony made accessories aren't exactly cheap

I have a Pentax K-X and very happy with it so far! I managed to pick one up for £360 - single lens kit.

I have a Sony a230 and have no complaints about it :)
I got a Tamron Macro lens for it, a little less $$ than a Sony lens.

I have an a380 and am very happy with it. The grip can feel small to some people but I suggest that you hold one in your camera shop and see how it feels. I have no probs with the grip but it depends on the size of you hands. Also google and find some reviews online, there is heaps of info out there. I have my kit lenses and a macro, there are high end lenses and more budget lenses and sigma and tameron both have lenses to suit the Sony a mount.

I have an Alpha and I love it. I was like you, rapidly outgrowing the p&s and needed more camera, reasonably priced. I picked the Sony cause my previous two cameras were both Sony and they were tough little cameras.

I have the Sony Alpha 330. I love it! I picked the Sony because my point & shoot was a sony, and its a great camera, and I have a sony vaio. I have 3 lens. The two it came with, 55mm, 55-200mm telephono, and I bought a Sigma 50mm macro lens, which I love

I use a Sony a350. My initial purchase included the two standard kit lenses. My only complaint is that the smaller of the two kit lenses packed it in about a month ago (not quite 3 years old) but I rarely used that lens these days. I bought the Sony 50mm macro lens earlier this year and love it! Check out my album if you like :-)

I'm the same as Alex - I have an A390 and am totally in love with it. Apart from the two lenses which came with it (18-55 and 55-200) I also have a Tamron 28-300 which I would never be without. When we were away I did get a wide angle lens kit which came with the added bonus of a macro lens which is nice but I sometimes forget I have it because I just can't carry my full kit everywhere. While it is school holidays I am going to make a concerted effort to get it on the camera more and use it. But love my Sony, and even bought a Sony point and shoot to keep in my handbag.

Thank you everybody. Your feedback is helpful. I feel more comfortable with the Sony Alpha if I purchase a DSLR-- not til after the first of May (graduation), but hopefully.

@mrgtrueman @nolovesincerer I will look at Pentax also. I'll try to have a more open mind about Pentax. I have a 10 year old Pentax film SLR and it's fiddly, but you seem to like yours.
