Photo backup?

April 24th, 2010
As I lugged my main computer into the shop for a blown motherboard (eternally grateful for my warranty which includes a full data backup -- no files, photos, or music will be lost), I knew I had all my photos backed up either on CD/DVD, flickr, an external hard-drive or a combination. I wouldn't have lost anything but it sure would have been a pain in the butt to transfer all those files since I don't actually have everything in one place. [confession] I hadn't done a full computer backup recently.[/confession] It'll already be a headache replacing programs.

Would you be able to replace your photos? Would it be easy or fairly simple?

oh... and go and do a full backup today, if you don't have a recent one!

This will probably sound a little crazy but I have been saving each photo I post on 365 in three other places: an external hard drive and then on two separate websites (kodakgallery and snapfish). I know it's overkill but if my computer crashed I would be heartbroken if I lost my photos. It's not that they are masterpieces or anything, but this project has really meant a lot to me. I just want to be sure that at the end of it all I have 365 pictures documenting my year.

Yes I have my best ones on the internet, even if they're low res. and also we have a mahoosive server in our basement which everything on my laptop is backed up on weekly.

Lyn, I use an External 500gb Seagate Hard drive just in case. Also, sites like SmugMug are good for archiving.

I also use an external back up, but like Kerri26, I back all my photos up in multiple places...to Flickr for one, but since the main computer I use is my school MacBook Pro laptop, I also download all my images to my home Dell desktop PC...yet backing up the photos alone is not enough for me as I want to have a copy of all my postings...so I also have a photo blog that is almost a duplicate of 365 posts ....except that all the comments are missing :-( Now if there was a way to also back up all the wonderful comments I would certainly do that too...did I happen to mention that I am an anal A-type educator? Hahaha...

I did lose a great deal of things a while back, so I back things up now.

I use a 1 TB external hard drive daily!

I lost all about 80% of our digital photos when our PC was hit by lightning in the month before we left Samoa. Our oldest son managed to recover a handful but I grieved for a long time and still feel physically sad when reminded about it. I couldnt store things on the net back then as our connection was too slow to upload and was waiting to get back to NZ for a break to get an external hard drive to back up when it happened. I now back up to an external drive plus store pics in a couple of places on the net...most of the time....in between I worry like a mad thing something is going to happen till I get a chance to back up.

I'm such a worrywart that I get concerned that my external hard-drive will fail, too.

Wu
I originally backed up my photos on my 750gig external but that quickly filled up....
and then as luck would have it, my external actually did bite the dust (which was the bad news bears)

however! I tend to do DVD backups of some photos (i.e. trips, my editing folder, etc)

Dont' have many of those but it's just one of those paranoid just incase moments

For the most part, externals are good to have and my brother's has never failed

I'm actually moving everything to my pseudo-external drive now (got enclosure for existing extra HD as wanted everything in one place/save money/less waste). I think with the external, it'll be easier to back up more frequently (since the process will not involve booting up another computer)

I like the idea of an external hard drive however those crash too. I switched my stuff to a third party vendor which gaurantees my data. I use CRASH PLAN And the nice thing.... you can try them out for 1 month free. The down side, if you have a lot of data it takes a while for your stuff to get online. It does a trickle effect to back it up. I was turned on to this by a friend and I have not been disappointed (nor have I needed to used the restore yet except for testing purposes).
