I am a recent SLR user, and have a D90 with a 18-105 kit lens. (Nikkor)
Would love to by a new lens that would give me enough zoom to photograph sneak portraits of faces. Would like to stay with hand held. Does any-one have advise? I looked at Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR, that is really reasonably priced.
The Nikon 70-300mm VR had a good review from Ken Rockwell. I hope not to spend a arm and a leg.
As you are suggesting the Nikon 70-300, you should also consider the Tamron 70-300 f:4-5.6 in the VC USD version (the most recent, and stabilized one). I use it with the D90 and do not regret the choice at all. It's really worth the price compared to the Nikon one. This lens also has very good reviews (be careful to look at the model I indicate, as the previous one, not stabilized, is pretty bad compared to it).
I just purchased the very Tamron lens that @scatcat is recommending and I'm very pleased with it thus far. The stabilization is suberb. Since I just made the purchase, I've only taken a handful of shots with it around the house and haven't done much in the way of distance yet. My specific purpose for this lens is sporting events, and I'll give her a good go in a couple of weeks at the Houston Astros baseball game. Here is one I shot with it in the back yard yesterday though...
@scatcat - Thanks Muse, I have to agree with all the above, although I find the rotation a little stiff, but that is certainly not a deal breaker. I can't wait to see what she can do in Minute Maid Park!

I, too, love the lens. It's fast, pretty much silent (though not as much as the Nikon), good optical quality.
