Tell Me about Your Camera Bag

May 6th, 2011
Just got my first dslr yesterday. I want a camera bag that will carry my Sony A390 with kit lens attached, an extra battery, a lens cloth, a small cell phone, some cash, keys, and another lens later. In a perfect world it wouldn't scream "camera bag" or cost an arm and a leg, but these are negotiable.

Any recommendations? If you have a dslr, what do you carry as a camera bag?

Nod
For DSLR and a couple of lenses, I'd go for Thinktank.

I have one of this (either 35 or 40)

How I long for a dslr... :)

I bought one of these a few weeks ago. It would do everything you want it to do:

I have two; a smaller Gaudi one I use when it's just the camera and lens attached, which I can oftentimes chuck in a bigger purse (although it does get me strange looks and questions... "do you have a giant loaf of bread in your bag?") and a bigger Lowepro which fits the body and up to five lenses.

I have one of these with a different pattern. Holds dSLR with kit lens, purse, battery, phone and a second lens, with a little space left over.

I have Ginger from Epiphany.

I wanted something i could carry what I wanted with me, but really wanted for it to look more like a purse than camera bag. I can carry my 40D (usually has my 24-70 attached) my 70-300, my 50 mm, and my flash. Plus extra batteries, my cell phone, and wallet.

This one is originally from etsy. I definitely wanted something non-camera bag looking.

the Bags I lug around would be too big for what you need Hope, and mine scream "PHOTOBAG"... so I am no guide.

But if you end up with more lenses and a second body and the need for something waterproof, then let me know. I can review my bags for you then.

@lolanae - this bag doesn't look like mine...

@bobfoto huh?
May 6th, 2011
@lolanae - mine is plain and boring and big and huge, whereas your bag here is very cute. I think Hope is probably looking for a bag more like yours then mine.

@bobfoto - ahhh! hehe. I have a headache at the moment, and your comment didn't make complete sense when I first read it. Sorry! =)

@lolanae I am in love and my photographer friend would be as well if she seen this. Details please????

@cookie123 - I actually bought it from another lady. It's new to me, and according to the lady I purchased it from the maker is no longer in business. I do know there are other makers on etsy.com that hand make the bags.

Got my bag through photojojo and I love it.

My two cents would tell you to get a real big one now and fill it up as you get more into photography and different lenses, also, consider a bag that is also a back pack, now I do not know what an arm and a leg is your mind, but for under a $100 you can get a real nice backpack/slingpack that will more than accomodate what you have and also give you additional room if you add more lenses, or a flash or what ever. I like the lowpro series, you can even get them that are waterproof, and the only people that know whats in them, are people who use them, just my two cents.

I rock a Lowepro Slingshot 200 and I love it. It has plenty of room for dSLR and 3 spare lenses (at least), the charger for it, a tiny mini tripod, the manual, some lens filters, memory cards, remote triggers and cables and all sorts.

Also, very importantly, has a built in waterproof cover you can pull out and wrap around it, should you get caught out.

@cookie123 I have one similar to Brandie's and also got on Etsy - see site here: http://www.etsy.com/search/handmade?q=snugglens. She was out of business for some time due to health issues but is back and makes the most adorable bags!

Thank you all for the great ideas. I'll be clicking links and exploring the options. Maybe I need to think more carefully about where I'll be taking my camera, under what conditions, etc.

@geniabeana Your bag is very stylish. I love it, but I'm not sure if I'm that cool. Something definately to consider.

@karens68 I like your bag too, another option if I go the stylish route :)

@lolanae Very cool bag. I love Etsy. Unfortunately, I haven't been able tp find a bag I like that doesn't have the velcro front closure.

@chamrick I'll look into this on Etsy

@lauriemct Like this bag a lot. Reminds me of when I used to sail with my grandfather. Another contender, just wish the website showed the inside of the bag better.

@eyebrows I'm wondering if all the Lowpro slings are weatherproof or just the 200. I'm considering this option if I'm going to be taking my camera on my several mile walks.

@wjw1741 I see your point, and I do like many of the Lowpro features

@viranod The tank looks a little beyond my needs, but @wjw1741 may be right. Maybe I should get a bigger bag now and grow into it?

@wormentude I can see how I might like this in another pattern. I like the convenience of a messenger. Just wish Amazon showed inside the bag.

@indiannie_jones I think I like your idea. Two bags. One inexpensive small one for short treks. A bigger, more utilitarian version for all day outings.

@sobefree Don't give up hope. I've longed for a dslr forever, but I didn't think I'd ever really be able to afford one. I saved some money and received some as gifts and suddenly it was possible if I don't spend another penny this month.

Thanks again to everyone. I have much to consider. hmmmm

I had the 100 before this and that was too. I'm pretty sure it's a standard feature across the range.
May 7th, 2011
@eyebrows Weatherproofing would be handy as I walk a lot.
May 7th, 2011
They also appear to do specifically waterproof ones which may be more useful.
May 7th, 2011
@eyebrows Does the waterproof cover on your do the job pretty well??
May 7th, 2011
Sure does; I got caught out last bonfire night in rather a downpour, and had a 45 minute trek back to my car, completely exposed to the elements.

I got soaked through, and while proclaiming the camera bag to be "bone dry" would be singing its praises rather too blindly, it certainly wasn't damp enough to warrant any concern for its contents, and only needed a brief drying for its outer layer and waterproof cover. The inside was still perfectly dry.
