What type of spider is this??

May 9th, 2011

Saw this spider in my backyard yesterday and thought it was actually kind of cute. WHat was interesting was it was inside a web-like cocoon with another slightly smaller spider. I am just wondering what kind of spider it is and why the two were in the cocoon?

I just read your profile to see where you are from..are you currently living in New Jersey? You might be able to find out what spiders tend to live in your area through search engines. Also, there are plenty of forums on the internet that would specialize in identifying spiders among many other kinds of critters! I tried looking for you just by your profile info saying you were from New Jersey..but it may need more specific information than that. Hope this helps a bit. :)

Yeah I am in Monmouth County NJ. I have been searching photos and bug sites off and on all day but so far I haven't found anything that looks like this little guy.

@loriromp Thanks Lori! I was thinking it was a jumping spider but the colors were a bit different. They aren't aggressive are they? Because the one I took a picture of was on my kid's outdoor toy!!

I'm with Kimmi...looks like a jumping spider. I've seen the big ones here.
A great website is www.whatsthatbug.com....but you'll have to search for it

I don't think they are "aggressive" but they certainly will jump on you.

Nice shot of a Jumping Spider, as others have said it's a species of Phidippus. Possibly Phidippus clarus or a closely related species.

I sure hope these are very good macro shots and they are not that big in real life.
