Critique and Comment

May 11th, 2011
Quite awhile ago there was a thread started that followed along the same line as the browse and pick threads- can't remember who originally started it so please forgive me. The premise of the thread was to go to the album of the person who posted before you and share their latest photo along with what you like technically about the photo and also what you might have done differently that might improve the shot. I know we all love getting the positive comments on our shots, but many of us are also seeking some critique to help us improve our photography skills. Please try not to use, "I wouldn't have done anything differently", as this isn't constructive to the photographer. So who's game? I'll start by posting my latest photo:

I'm game Rebbecca. I've never done this, but I think it is a great idea. First of all I like the rich use of color and the blurred background. I think I may have liked the dandelion to be a bit more closer to the lips to actually capture the movement of the flower being blown by the subject. that would have added more excitement yet to the shot. Here is my last posting..

@digitalrn I love the black and white on this and the look of motion, but I would like to see some blur between the feet as well to make the feet stand out more.
Here's mine from a mini 365 meet up at the butterfly pavilion in L.A.

I love the detail you captured of the butterfuly, especially in the wings, and also the background blur is beautiful. I would have like to see the leaf not get cropped off on the right side.
Here is mine from today.

@rebcastillo77 great idea to restart this thread!

Great shot, I thought I would have liked to see a bigger DOF so more of the leaves were in focus, but other wise very pretty.

Here is my shot

@triptych_angel You give critique on the persons before you photo and then you post a photo of your own to be critqued. Though reading through Rebecca's it does sound like you pick a photo of the person before you but it seems like everyone else has been doing the other way. haha I guess I don't really know

@andifree haha yeah i figured that out after I replied so deleted my comment and posted my photo, I thought it was the same as browse and pick but I was wrong...oh well :D

@triptych_angel I think the girl looks great, I like that she's busy and not smiling at the photographer. The DOF is good too. I think it's a pity the ponytail isn't completely in the picture, and that string of hair is just covering her eye. The eyes are so important... But the B&W really works!

@geertje nice shot, nice colors and good vintage feel about the picture. lighting is good but a bit harsh ! composition is superb. There is not much i would change in this picture!

@geertje Hi Geertje! I really like how you played with the natural light and shadows and this photo tells an interesting story. Just one comment, there seems to have a lot of clutter or elements as subjects that distort the whole perspective. Perhaps trim it a little bit by putting the first clothespole at the left side consistent with the others to avoid destruction or exclude it and shot the whole scene I meter above the ground. I'm not a pro though, just me thinking. :-)

@bugik I really like the composition and colors on this shot. I also like the shape of the blossoms, looks like they are past their peak time and yet still beautiful. The soft focus on the background flowers allows the one in front to stand out, but I might like to see even softer dof (or sharper) - they are just enough in focus that my eyes strain to see them. If there was more blur, the front one might have a bit more punch.

@flydragon Thanks a lot for the comments. You're right, a softer DoF would make the front flower more special. I haven't thought of this... gotta consider the next time. :-)

@harsha you seemed to have been skipped so here is my thoughts on your shot:
Great perspective- I love shots from roof tops, I also like how you can see the mountain in the background through the fog. One thing that I think would have improved the shot is to change where the horizon line is- Landscapes always seem to pack more punch when the horizon isn't directly center in the frame. Think rule of thirds.

@flydragon i like the way you have edited it , but I don't know anything about this type of editing , so I can't critique it very well , I am sorry ! It would have been awesome to see a full body shot !
