365 Rules.

May 1st, 2010
After reading the Stock on Popular Page discussion and after I posted this picture it got me thinking: Are there rules to this 365 project? And if so, what are they?

Personally, I believe this project is a form of expression and growth and not rules and regulations. To be honest, no, I don't photograph everyday, I'm a full time student with a part time job. Between essays and seminars I don't have time for pictures. And, when I do, I don't want to feel rushed. I want to take my time and have the image really mean something. In the beginning, I rushed things too much, I tried to stick to it everyday. Now, I'm trying to be honest with myself and shoot when I feel like it. If I lack inspiration while I photograph, I know it wont come out well.

It's almost as if I've set the rules for myself and this 365 project. But, is that right? Is that how this project is going to go for the next 280 days? Or... should I be getting back to what everyone else is saying?

What are your rules?
May 1st, 2010
My rules for myself are to actually take a photo every single day. 365 means just that to me Three hundred and sixty five days of taking photos everyday. Yeah, that means that every day is not going to be Ansel Adams or some spectacular freaking photo that everyone is going to freak out over and I'm not going to love every shot I take. Sometimes my shot is a pot of beans, or a cigarette on the ground or a photo of myself, and sometimes it's a beautiful landscape or a well done portrait or *something* you know. TO ME...it's important that *I* have integrity in my project to actually take a photo every day. As I said on another thread, when I tell someone "I took a photo every day for 1 year" I want to mean it. and not be saying "I took a photo every few days for a year" It's up to everyone else what 365 means to them. I don't think there are any real rules.

No rules. That is all.

It's an individual challenge, and thus it means different things to different people.

For me, it's a challenge to pick up a camera and take (and post) a photo of mine every day. I would never consider posting someone else's photos. For me, the challenge comes not only in finding the time and subject (the themes here really help with that) but in learning about techniques, perspective, colouring and post-processing. I'm learning new things about my camera and my eye every day.

The second part of this, for me, is seeing other people's work, and learning from them. Not in a "cool, I want to do that too" way, but in learning about how other people see the world, and also about how they treat their photographic journey.

Have I "cheated"? Not by my rules, no. I'm a single mom and have 2 teens, and I work from home, sometimes to insane deadlines. I'm doing the best I can, and am having great fun with it while learning something new every day and making new friends. That's good enough for me.

YMMV, of course. :)
May 1st, 2010
To me, if I don't take the photo on that day, I can't use it. I can go back to the same place as I've taken a photo one day and re-shoot it but I aim to take one every day, maybe that's just me though xD I wouldn't say I had to post it every day though as there are times when i can't get to a computer but I always make sure to catch up on posting of I've been away :]
May 1st, 2010
I have specific rules for myself. For me, it means I take a picture every day with my camera (whether it be my Canon Powershot or with my Mac). I am also posting my pictures straight from the camera--no touch ups, no cropping, etc. My pictures may not look finished or extra vibrant, but I want to see what I can do with the camera not with Photoshop. I don't think others should have to follow my rules, though. If others want to use Photoshop (or another photo editing program) to touch up their photos, then so be it. And, with some pictures, I do touch them up afterward and put them in my DeviantArt gallery, but not in my Project 365 gallery.
May 1st, 2010
I totally agree with Jenn. Her rules are basically mine, too. My pictures aren't going to be stunners every day, but that is not the point. There are days where I might have a picture X which is aesthetically better, but decide to post pictures Y, which might be less of an eye catcher, but means more to me.
May 1st, 2010
My rules: 1. Only use shooping for removing blemishes or cropping, and even then only if really needed. 2. Try to take "artistic" things over "blog" things, although I bend this one frequently. 3. If feeling lonely and wanting some female attention slap a Danbo shot up.
May 1st, 2010
Personally, nothing kills motivation for me faster than *rules*. I take a picture every day, and whether it's good, bad or indifferent, I post it. I just feel like that's the commitment I've made for myself. I think it's true that the project means different things to everybody, but that's all good! We're all different, and what better way to show that than with this project. Part of the fun for me is playing with the editing, changing colors, brightness, etc. I don't get too drastic with manipulating the picture, but I do have fun playing with it.
May 1st, 2010
I always use my own photos but I may not have taken them on that particular day. My joy is looking through my old shots and finding one that matches my mood for that day. Sometimes the picture is taken the same day and that is even better, but for me 365 means a photo a day and not necessarily one taken the same day. I just enjoy posting and looking at other peoples photos.

Here's what i tell my young students when I introduce them to poetry: Do you know what the rules are for poetry? The rules are that there are no rules. I look on 365 as a personal challenge. You are free to set those limits for yourself and there are no photo police lurking to shut you down. On second thought, I'm revising my rule for 365. The one rule is: Enjoy yourself.
May 2nd, 2010
I only use my own photos, but might post a photo I took on another day. I recently was out of town for 4 days and did not have access to a computer - so when I got home I posted pictures from my trip for several days. I've only been doing this a month and I am trying to post every day but I know it's not going to be possible for a whole year. I'll do the best I can.
May 2nd, 2010
I have missed a day 2 or 3 times, & when I have I take one to fill the space as soon as possible & of something that represents the day I missed, or could've been taken the day I missed.
I've also posted a few photos here and there that weren't taken by me, but they are usually of me & represent my day the best of any other photos from that day.
May 2nd, 2010
My rules are to take a picture every day. I seldom photoshop, largely because I haven't a clue how, though I've started playing with it occassionally. I don't particularly care if the photos are good, just that they were taken - I will occassionally pick bad shots that are more representative over better shots that I just don't love. I have occassionally posted pics by someone else if I'm in them - which generally means my pictures that day either weren't very good or just didn't capture what I was doing that day - this is especially true on the weekends, as I hash (run) and I can't always carry a camera, plus half the fun of hashing is the people I do it with, so if they took the pic, that's fine with me. I do still require that I take a picture that day though. I post a lot of the extra pics on my blog (www.life-suitcase.blogspot.com)
May 2nd, 2010
i'm a firm believer that if you use an old photo, if you skip a day or if you use a photo not taken by you... then you are not really doing the 365 challenge correctly. It is a personal 365 day photography *challenge* after all. But then again, who is to say what correctly is in the minds of everyone out there doing this challenge.

Everyone goes about taking on a challenge in a different way. Me, i am 100% committed to doing it the way i feel it is suppose to be, the way it was explained to me years ago (before this website even came into existence). If i cheat, forget, or miss a day - then i am out. End of story. I have been out 2 years running! this is the year i will make it ALL 365 days though! The last few weeks have been hard, i've hit a rut, but i continue to take a photo each and every single day - no matter what it looks like, it is what i took that day. They won't all be perfection, and nor should they be... life is imperfect, so my 365 challenge images will also be imperfect. I might not be able to post the photos on this websie every single day, but i certainly will be taking a photo every single day of this year! :o)

I suppose the point of it all, besides being a challenge, is to learn and to grow with your photography - so as long as you are getting something out of it - then nothing is wrong in however you take on this challenge.

just be sure you are having fun! :o)

I really appreciate everyone's feedback on this, it's really interesting!

I like reading about everyone's different takes on this project, it really goes to show the amount of diverse- belief wise- people on here. I absolutely adore it!

I wish everyone the best of luck in their 365 projects! You all can do it!
May 2nd, 2010
Initially I wanted to use 365 to capture the small moment in my and my family's life to share with relative that I don't communicate with often enough. So, that meant taking a picture a day to capture that day. For the most part, I have held to that concept. I have gotten caught up in a couple of the themes and/or challenges which has changed the focus somewhat. But the reality is ... if I want to post an old photo and it is meaningful to me, I'll do it. There are no 365 police! And, BTW, I did post a stock photo (of a squirrel dressed up in military dress) as a joke for Louise. It was only up for a couple of hours, but it did make the popular page. I did not claim it as my own, and I think everyone got a kick out of it ...
May 2nd, 2010
When I started this project I decided to take and post a photo every day, no matter what. It cannot take that much time, can it? But life with all its mysteries, surprises and unpleasant events sometimes decides other.
I hate empty days so I fill them with photos taken some other day. After all, this is also my project and I cannot always follow the rules, not even my own rules.
46 years of living has taught me to have mercy for myself.
May 2nd, 2010
I try and take a photo everyday like Jenn T said at the beginning of this thread or I do a similar thing like Laura Wheeler and put photos in about that day if I miss it.
May 2nd, 2010
I think you just have to make rules for yourself, I personally am striving to take a photo a day for the whole year.
I will not be posting images that were not taken on that day, unless circumstances arise.
This is so I improve my skills and try out things I haven't yet.
This works well for me because I do have the time, and I am striving to do photography as a living.

But I do believe that this photo is about expression and creativity also, so I believe if you say do a wonderful touch up photo like you posted Stefanie, you should be able to post that for your pic of the day,

I don't think the image should HAVE to be a photograph, I just think it should be something you have created yourself...not a stock image or a photo you have found on the internet
May 2nd, 2010
P.S. 4. Never miss a day. Haven't missed one yet
May 2nd, 2010
Actually, interesting off-shoot question:

If it's gone midnight and you take a shot, do you still count it as for the "previous" day? By my possibly-retarded logic, if I haven't gone to bed yet, it's not a new day yet, and still counts :)
May 2nd, 2010
i don't think there is any "rules", it's how YOU want to do this project. Everybody has their own approach/way to participate, whether you are doing it to record your everyday life, or you are doing it to improve your skills, or you are just doing it to make more friends that likes photography...it's totally up to you. We are all in this for fun. I, personally am against stock photos, I just think it doesn't make any sense, but if people are doing it for their own reasons, who am I to "judge". Bottom line, have fun with it!
May 2nd, 2010
My rules are based upon my goals for this project which include learning new techniques both in taking the photo and in learning post-processing. My photo must be my own and it must have been taken at least within a couple of days of posting. If using a photo from a previous day, then I must edit it on the day it is posted. I only use photos from previous days in extreme circumstances (ie: I'm sick, too busy in events where it would be inappropriate to have my face behind a camera, or equipment failure)

I'm really disappointed when I see a stock photo. I want to see photos here that I can't see elsewhere. I want to be inspired by my fellow 365ers but I won't judge how others choose their shots. I do believe that anyone using a stock photo should give credit to the original photographer. To claim someone else's intellectual property is a form of theft, in my not-so-humble opinion.
May 2nd, 2010
I think the object is for you to get out and take a picture a day and post it. Your picture, Your thoughts, Your view of the world.

Are you going to make it every day? NO!
Are you going to only take ONE picture a day? NO!
Are you going to "touch up" the photo? Sometimes! Not because I can, because I can improve the clouds a little, I can remove the annoying reflective street sign, license plate or some thing little that might draw your attention away from the subject. Especially the license plate, be it mine or someone else, privacy.

Being that I post around 7 PM PDT ( oh-dark something GMT), today's post will be uploaded tomorrow according to the site software. Am I a day behind, or day ahead? Usually two days ahead, again I can't take a picture every day, sometimes the weather does not permit that. We all have a life. Besides, Site software won't let you go more than 3 or 4 days ahead. But as I take 10-20 shots a day, how can I say just one shot is ""The"" best of the day?

Like Chimom said "Have fun with it!".

Show me what you're world is like, show me your part of the world. Pick a theme for yourself and go for it. (mine is "What I saw on the way to work"). Enjoy.
May 2nd, 2010
I'm with Murray & Chimom on this - it's supposed to be fun! So no "rules". We all have stuff going on and who's to say what will happen, e.g. access to internet camera breaking... I have my own thing going on but wouldn't want to impose that on anyone else. It would be nice to mention if it isn't a photo you've taken yourself, just to give credit to the photographer, but there are more serious things to get worried about really! :- )
May 3rd, 2010
Today, I am playing catch up. I've been dealing with some health issues, and could not get out each day. At first I was discouraged thinking, "That's it! I've blown it!" But, as some of you say, there really are no set rules. I'm going back over some pics I took in April, and will post those!
May 3rd, 2010
My goal is to take lots of pictures, and to get inspiration from themes or challenges. Some days I take several pictures I like and some days I don't get around to it (no excuses as I am retired). I try to post the photo on the day or the day after it was taken. I got a new camera shortly after I joined this project so I am having lots of fun learning to use it.

I like to do post camera enhancements so that is part of the fun for me. I use Paint shop Pro (PSP) for editing. Some days I make big changes and some days I just crop a lot.

I will be going on vacation at the end of this month and I will take pictures every day but I won't be able to post them until I get home.
May 3rd, 2010
My only reason for doing 365 is to become a better photographer. I certainly respect anyone who uses this as a daily chronicle of a year and I believe that is an honorable goal and perhaps even the best use of 365. It's not my goal. I take a photo almost every day, especially since actually joining 365 which was sometime around March 1. When I have a photo that is a fill in, I post the date it was taken for the purpose of full disclosure. I enjoy the discipline of 365, but find it a little frustrating when I have taken pictures for four good hours and have a number of shots of very diverse subjects and locations. Somewhere along the way I decided it was ok for me to post fill-ins and I do, especially on those pre-March dates. I know I can put them on Flickr, but I have enough to keep up with, and this has become my primary photography community--a community I appreciate very much. Bottom line. Let's have fun.
May 3rd, 2010
oh wow.. now i feel like i'm cheating a little..
i absolutely never post any photo that is not mine. I only post what i took with my camera BUT i have to admit i don't take a photo every day.
for me my 365 has to remain fun. i don't want to ever feel like i'm forcing myself to take photos. i usually photograph things ..i would say 5-6 days out of a week.. but not 7 days a week. but i don't post anything thats more than a day or so old. (for example my post today was taken yesterday. but i wouldn't post today a photo i took a week ago)

and photo editing.. i love it! i think just as much art and creativity goes into that as it does taking the photo. sometimes i use it..sometimes i don't..sometimes it's subtle...sometimes it's way over the top..lol
May 3rd, 2010
my only rule... if it didnt come from my camera... its not going into my project.
May 3rd, 2010
I agree with Mark. I post my own pictures. Otherwise, I try to take a picture a day, but sometimes life gets in the wqay and I have to make due.
May 3rd, 2010
This is a test for me - a test of my commitment... I figure if I can manage to do this ONE THING every day - just take a picture - then I can take on other things as well... My rules for myself is that I must take at least 1 picture a day. Now, I may not post it on the same day as I take the picture, but when I do post it, it will be for the day I took the pic. Also, this is a very transitional year for me - if you would have told me a year ago I would no longer have a place that was mine and that I would be traveling through the US and Europe living with other people, I would have laughed in your face. So many things have happened in a year. Knowing this now on a very personal level, I figured it would be awesome to capture this year in pictures.

What I didn't expect was to find that I really am enjoying making better pictures... paying more attention to light, angles and color... and I didn't realize how much this project would make me look at every day ordinary things in a different way... DEFINITELY an added unexpected benefit!
May 3rd, 2010
One a day, every day, like vitamins it makes you stronger!
May 3rd, 2010
I take a photo every day. Even on days where I'd rather stay in bed forever. Those days just usually mean I go out into the yard and hope to heck there's some kind of bug or strange flower there.

I think working with what you have around you and making that translate well in a photo (even if it's a piece of bread)... is the challenge here. It also helps that I take my camera with me wherever I go.
May 3rd, 2010
My own personal rules are just to take beautiful photos and post them every day. I'm new to photography and I like challenging myself. It's not a a "document my day" sort of project for me. It's more of a photograph the beautiful things around me type of thing.
Sometimes I will have several great photos from one day and I would hate for them to never be seen because I already posted a photo of that day.
The only thing I'm against in this project as far as rules go is using a photo that isn't your own.
May 3rd, 2010
There really aren't any set rules; this is your project, and you should complete it in the way that is most fun and beneficial for you. Personally, I take a self-portrait everyday because I want to challenge myself-- I feel that if I don't set certain rules for myself, I won't actually represent 365 consecutive days of my life, and that is important to me. I am a full-time student too, and sometimes the workload means that I have to take a boring picture of my hands or feet to get a picture in-- but for me personally, I'd rather take a boring picture and not miss a day than to wait around until I have an idea for the perfect picture, because that goes against the purpose of me starting this project.
May 3rd, 2010
I take a picture everyday. Some days I have what I think are great shots and other days I have pictures of whatever is around me (jelly beans, golf balls, the inside of my fridge...) At least I am thinking about the shot and picking up my camera. I'm here to work on my photography and one way to do that is to pick up my camera each day. Some days it's a cell phone or a point and shoot but even those days I am paying attention to the composition of my shot.

As others have said, in the end it is whatever you want it to be. I appreciate others that doing the same thing as me but understand people do things for all sorts of reasons. Just have fun and keep shooting.
May 3rd, 2010
I really appreciate everyone's feedback on this, I've read everybody's responses and it is so interesting to see everyone's perspective on this challenge!

I think we can all agree though- despite our differences- that our main goals for the 365 project is to grow and have fun!

Good luck everyone!
May 3rd, 2010
I don't govern myself by the rules haha.
Some days I don't have time to add photos but I take them all the time.
Sometimes I add photos from the past that I absolutely love.
I just want them all somewhere that I can see them and be proud of them.
=)
May 3rd, 2010
I believe the idea of this project ot be "to take a photo every day" and therefore, I have set myself the goal of taking a photo every day... Yeah obviously, days will come, and they have, when I've taken a sh*t load of what I think are good pics that I'd love to post, but in the end, I pick one and that will do..

On the flip side, there are days when I struggle for something to come up with anything, but so far, I've managed to snap something laying around the house to keep at it..

No worries to guys out there doing different, but for me, it's a challenge to keep at it every day, note something, upload something and keep going..

Each to there own... Don't worry what other people are doing... It's only a hobby...
May 4th, 2010
My rules are endeavouring to upload everyday, not having to upload a million in one go because I have forgotten/been too lazy.

Also not feeling any pressure to be a world class photographer like 80% of the users on this site haha. My photos are just my life, everyday things. I don't know a thing about composition or lighting. All photos are taken with my iphone or someone else's camera if my phone has no battery.

I've just recently uploaded two photos I made into a collage, I think that's okay too as long as the subjects aren't completely different things.

That's how I 365 roll!
May 4th, 2010
I can't always upload everyday, but I take a new picture every day. - Even if that means going back and shooting something a second or third time if I liked the shot, but chose a different one as the photo for that day.
That said, I have cheated once or twice, but always noted that in my description of the photo.
May 4th, 2010
It's definitely not possible to upload EVERYday! :) But my personal rule is to try!
May 4th, 2010
No rules for me. I used to worry (When first starting) to get a photo every day. Some days I've not been able to, due to work commitments, family, personal issues or just plain laziness!

But now, I go back if I've taken a few shots for one particular day, and used one of those (Since sometimes I want to use more than one photo from that day)

The thing that got me, is one person stole another persons photo. That's when I don't feel things are fair for others who think they took it. But I guess each to their own, since it's going to happen regardless.
May 4th, 2010
only a few simple rules i try to follow:
1. i must get my camera out every day
since i started this project, i hadn't used my camera in ages, i brushed off the cobwebs and now it's a frequent resident in my handbag :) i love how this project physically makes me drag out my camera to take a photo.

2. i must upload it everyday, if i forget to take one, i allow myself to steal a photo from the previous days lot, but i feel bad afterwards lol.

but that's it.

oh, and have fun! :)
May 4th, 2010
I'm OK with posting a photo that I did not take on said day. I feel as though I captured the moment, and I can't go back and re-capture the moment. I should be able to share that photo with others as I see fit.

My rules for 365.

Capture it.
Share it.
Love it.
Enjoy it.

And most of all..

Don't sweat the small stuff! :)
May 4th, 2010
My own 'personal' rules - take at least one picture a day (I usually take quite a few and select the best /most meaningful); with my camera and upload it to that day on the calendar (but won't necessarily upload that same day - hols etc get in the way). This is part journal for me, so the picture being taken on that very day is an important part of that. Not right or wrong, just a reflection of how I'm using this project. The only 'rule' that I, personally, would prefer people to follow is one of honesty if the picture isn't yours.
May 4th, 2010
there are rules? :)
May 4th, 2010
I forgot to say, above, that I don't feel it's right to use somebody else's picture, unless it's with permission, and clearly stated in your notes that it's not yours. Theft is theft, including that of artistic and intellectual property. Kind of like stealing your little sister's book report and passing it off as your own. Not cool.
May 5th, 2010
For me 365 is to document my life, but also to challenge myself in taking a photo every day. If I forget to take a photo and post one from another day, then I am hardly living up to the 365 challenge, am I? I would NEVER post a picture that I found on the internet. The only picture I have posted that wasn't taken by me, was a picture I was in at my birthday party and I wanted to document that family shot. But I was ok with this because a) I set up the shot, b) it was my camera, c) I didn't take it from someone who doesn't even know I've used it, d) it's relevant to my life and e) I took about 100 other photos that night and so I have still managed to take photos. That one was just particularly special to me.

I do find it challenging to find something every day... But that is part of the fun.
May 5th, 2010
I take a photo every day, but I don't necessarily post that/those photos. To me, this a site is more like a reminder to take a picture, and then post my best ones. [;
May 5th, 2010
mostly i'm 365ing as a journal. i completely stink at writing in a journal and so i thought this might be a bit easier. that said, i don't post everyday. i know that is lame but sitting down at the computer, having time and having my camera next to me is just not always possible. the 5 yr old walks in the room, the husband walks in the room, someone is at the door etc. normally my camera is in my purse and it forgets to walk into the sit next to the computer. i do try to take a picture everyday. sometimes the line is a little blurry because we were at the same place or doing the same thing for several days, then i just choose the best of the 100 or so i took. really somedays, i take a nutty number of pictures of the same thing because i am trying to work on my skill. somedays i get caught up in wanting to tell the full story of the day and those days i end up making a collage. loving picasa for doing the collage work. i don't do post-editting, a time constraint, desire to be honest with my ability thing. but i think the beauty of the thing is that it is so much what we each decide to make of it.
May 5th, 2010
It seems that there is quite a difference in personal rules between those aiming to document their life vs. improve their photography skills. Which makes perfect sense.
May 5th, 2010
I treat mine like a diary. Sometimes I'm really inspired, sometimes I'm not but I make the effort to take a new picture every day and comment on it in a way that calls up the memory of that day for me. Yesterday I took a picture of my keyboard...wasn't feeling it. Today, I'm going for a bike ride and hope to find something lovely to shoot to remember the location by.
May 6th, 2010
I agree with Nikki W and Mark Fioretto :)
May 6th, 2010
It would be good to be able to follow the rules and photograph and post every day but I think it would lose quite a few followers. Sometimes I just don't have a camera with me. Other times I don't have time.
To me the object is to look at a lot of other lovely photos posted on the site, plus add your own when possible. But most of all, I'm enjoying meeting so many other lovely people from around the world and sharing in a small part of their lives.
May 6th, 2010
I agree with those who have said they take a picture every single day, no matter what it is. I could upload pictures from other times during the year but I don't think that's what it is about. It's to chronical a year in the life of.... the good and the bad, the normal and the exciting, all mixed in together.

The ones I post are not necessarily my best work, just something that came to mind that day, before midnight.
May 6th, 2010
My goal is to just improve my photography skills.
I do take pictures every day but they don't always get posted that day. Sometimes that's because my finicky computer won't let me on there (usually that's the culprit) but, other times, I'm just busy.
But being able to see other people's amazing work and keeping my camera with me at all times has made a difference. I'm not claiming to be any good, but I am improving. And that's what matters. :)

I have missed one day so far of putting it on the day I took it, but I try and do it as quickly as possible.

Here is a little blurb from the mail I was sent when I joined:

"What is a 365 Project?

A 365 Project is a photography project, you take 1 photo each day for a year on a subject of your choosing and share it with the world."

So it reads to me that you take a picture every day for a year and you upload it every day. Anyone can go dig through old photos and upload them.

I am enjoying looking at everyone's pictures and getting to know them through their photos.

The only times I've missed pictures are when I've forgotten - I've never omitted a picture because I couldn't be bothered. That's really the only rule I have. Sometimes if I've taken a bunch of really good pictures on one day I will post one on one of the days following, if I like it more than the picture I've taken on that day. Or if I've taken a whole bunch of pictures over a weekend I'll just pick and choose from them as a pool, for that weekend as a whole.

I like to post pictures that I'm happy with, for the most part, although I'll sometimes post ones that didn't quite work out, to show that I tried it. I think I have become a little more flexible since people have started showing an interest in my pictures. I feel more like I should post things people want to see, rather than things that are representative of my day. I don't think that's a bad thing though, it has encouraged me to stretch my limits. But sometimes I do things that are fun and I want to share that, and I do that through 365. So I guess your rules depend on what you're doing this project for?

It's simple: To each his own.
