@minxymissk That's the point.. there is no 'value' in art so it is whatever someone will pay... moving this to a lesson we can take from it... what are our photos worth... well if someone will pay use $1 or $1,000 it is not a matter of skill or image... rather what someone's whim to pay for it is... find a rich bride with money to burn.... $10,000 wedding... find someone without two penny's to rub together... and your work is worthless....
@icywarm I guess you're right, to me, it was a nothing special photo; something I might see on here and skim over as an okay shot but not something I want to view large.
How strange and wonderful the human perception of beautiful art is! I guess I was just expecting something that would take my breath away for £4million!
@spaceman Ridiculous indeed. I'd never spend that much dosh on a selfie. But I do welcome any fool wanting to pay 4 million bucks for one of my shots :-]
Compare Sherman to the work of Kazimir Malevich or for that matter, Marcel Duchamp. The value is in the buyer's hands. Still, it is interesting, and solidifies Sherman's position as a minor art icon. Not that I would ever expect anyone to pay so much for my own work.
I think the article said it best. It was really wasn't about the photo. It was about winning an auction. I've been known to keep bidding on ebay just to win even if they darn thing isn't worth it.
I don't get it either - Wow. Not that I am saying any of my photos are any good but the first thing I thought when I saw the photo was - its very orange. I thought that a photo that sold for that much money would at least invoke some emotion of some sort ... but nope. Beauty really is the eye of the beholder! And if it is just about the thrill of the win - then the winner has way too much money ...... I think I need to meet them ;-)
@rachmel I'm with you on your last comment, I need to meet this nutter with too much money :) Show him some of my pictures and get me some of his money lol!
I clicked on the link and scrolled down ... looking .... looking for the 4 million dollar photo ...
Then I read it and it all made sense .. sort of .
Good on her for making that much money from her photo .
Imagine that man explaining to his partner what he decided to spend 4 million bucks on
