Does anyone use a Graphics Pad to edit their pictures?

May 16th, 2011
Hi all

I was reading in my 'Digital Photo Handbook' this afternoon about Graphics Pads that you can plug into your computer and use to edit your pictures rather than using a mouse.

This looks perfect for me as I'm currently using the touch pad on my laptop to edit and making a right old mess with selections (using Photoshop Elements 8)

So has anyone used a Graphics Pad, and if so, do you have any recommendations. I've seen this one on Amazon for £40 uk pounds and it looks OK to me.

Thanks in advance, Donna

I love using a graphics tablet, used to use one for everything... Wacom's budget models are pretty generous with features for the price and perform very well...

Wacom is the only way to go imo. You wont be sorry when you get it as it is as invaluable for painting masks and other painting tasks in PS
Ive been using my Intuos3 for ~3yrs+ and its served me awesome! If you are at all serious about Photoshop art, then its a MUST.

If you are not quite as serious about Photoshop art, the Wacom Bamboo is a decent tablet.

Sidenote: It will take you some time to get used to using it when you get it. Its very disorienting to draw/paint w/o looking at what you are doing but after about a week of use it will grow on you and itll become second nature.

Heres an example of something done w/ my tablet that id NEVER be able to do w/o. All of the dust was painted using the tablet and specialized brushes that i created for it. W/o the pressure sensitivity id never have the control i needed to create depth in both the dust and painting the layer masks.

@killerjackalope @zonnestraaltje @flamez @3nder Thank you all for your replies, that's a big help.

In my excitement of starting a topic, I forgot the link to the amazon item if anyone is interested: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wacom-Bamboo-Pen-Graphics-Tablet/dp/B002Q4U4AE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305568538&sr=8-1

I have a birthday coming up fairly soon and I think I know what will be going on the 'actual' list lol (as opposed to the wish / dream list which currently has a macro lens at the top lol!)

@3nder That picture is amazing - a Fav for sure.

I have one, but it is currently collecting dust. I just don't have the patience to sit down and actually practice with it so that I feel more comfortable with it than my mouse.

So funny that you posted this as I had the same exact thought today. This advice has proved very useful. Thanks for posting.

I started out with a tiny little "cheap" Wacom tablet about 8 years ago and the thing STILL WORKS. Thankfully my dad bought me a larger one a year and a half ago which has more options and better sensitivity, but even Wacom's "budget" tablets are just fabulous. I honestly can't even imagine editing without one. ... especially on a laptop!

Best of luck!

As I've said before, I'm an AutoCAD draftsman by trade, and about 6 months or so ago, I got tired of the carpal tunnel issues I was starting to have from running a mouse 8+ hours a day, so I bought the Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch. I absolutely LOVE it. I'm to the point now that using a mouse is frustrating for me, and am trying to get my employer to buy one for my workstation so I can bring mine back home for photo work. (Although it is really easy to transport back & forth if I need to do so). I'm also debating just leaving the Bamboo at work, and buying an Intous for home.
