Hmm, I tried checking out the Exif info on your photos since the best advice I read when choosing a lens was to see what focal length I tended towards with my existing zoom lens. Unfortunately, your photos don't seem to have that info to help you out.

I'm by no means an expert but recently narrowed down my choices to the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.8 lenses. It wasn't in my budget to splurge on a f/1.4 lens so I didn't even bother looking into those. I too am interested in portraits and doing more close-ups so I read a lot about how each one would be suited for those types of shots. Once you narrow down your list to a few lenses try searching past discussions here for more info. I wound up going with the 35mm because most of my shots were in that focal range and my house is cramped, so backing up from a shot isn't always an option. I'm 100% happy with my lens and don't regret buying it. I bought mine through Amazon but you might want to keep an eye on their prices as it can fluctuate every couple of days. I paid $200 for mine but noticed the price went up $10 two days later.

@sourkraut I have both those lenses, and they are both great!

Try renting a lens before buying to make sure you like it and it gives you the options you want. I have rented through lensrental.com and found the pricing affordable and the stock was always good. I never had to wait for a lens.

I did rent the Nikon 105mm Macro once and LOVED it! It is however on the pricey side so I haven't purchased it. I recently bought the 50mm 1.4 Nikon, just got it yesterday and love it so far. It's my first official "fast" lens and I'm happy!! :)

@noueissa i have the 35mm for my d3000 and it stays there most of the time. the only downside is it's somewhat too wide for some portraits. if you're more into portraits, i suggest checking out the new AF-S version of the 50mm f/1.8 which will autofocus on your d3100. i think it has almost the same price as the 35mm f/1.8. hth :D

Well, if you read this thread I started, you'll see which lens I prefer. =)
