Just wondering if anyone knows the name of the bugs in this photo. The plant is a perennial geranium and the bloom is quite tiny, maybe the size of a big thumb nail. Thanks!
Looks like crane flies - by the long legs and mosquito type appearance. Many lawn companies spray them since when they are in the larvae stage they can do damage to your lawn.
@cjwhite@triciaanddazzle@russianblue@5unflow3r These have long legs and bodies like crane flies but that is where the similarity ends. They are Stilt Bugs, true bugs in the family Berytidae. If you look closely at the original larger version image the upper one shows the piercing mouthparts they use on plants and sometimes other insects.
@robv@cjwhite@triciaanddazzle@5unflow3r@russianblue Wow, you guys are amazing to reply so quickly! I love this site! Thanks! Robert, you may have started something here .... I'm pretty good with plant names but am just starting to learn bug names ... and I'm going to remember your name! ;-) Thanks ever so much for the info. I take it, these guys have the body parts to eat my plants ... should I be worried about that?
Thanks again everyone, much appreciated.
