Anyone from Boston (or nearby)?

My husband and I will be in Boston for the 4th of July (3 nights) and we want to stay somewhere cool. Preferably a B&B.

Can anyone recommend someplace like that? Interesting, cool, iconic, fun...?
Is staying near the harbor on 4th of July a bad idea? We know nothing about Boston. Never been before.

i am originally from Boston:) great town and the food is to die for! if you are staying in the city proper, i would stick around copley place or Quicny Market....i have not been back in awhile, so someone else on the site may have a more updated suggestion...the 4th will be crazy near the harbor due to the pops...the show will be worth it though...just fantastic!!!!

Boston for the 4th is fantastic! You will have so much fun! I can't actually answer your question, we always stayed in a neighboring town like Cambridge. I can't wait to see your photos!

Quincy Market is fun. Enjoy! I love Boston. (I live in CT close to the MA border in Windsor Locks)

There are some great Bed and Breakfast's about 20min outside of Boston in Acton/Concord/Lexington area. This was the staging ground for the Revolutionary War and offers some great history. It's a fairly afluent area now with some great sights. It's a straight shot down the highway (Rt 95 to Rt 2). Route 2 cuts right through Concod and Acton; Lexington is similarly accessible. Among the scenic spots in that area is Walden Pond in Concord, MA.

I live on the south shore. There are some B&Bs on the Cape (about 1.5 hours south of Boston) which would be cool if you have transportation to/from the city and would like to escape to the beach after the crowds of the 4th. You'd also drive through Quincy and Plymouth - both of which have some cool historic sites.

I can't think of any B&Bs actually IN the city, but you can find some not as far as Cape Cod.

As for staying downtown on the 4th. I would say that you CAN. Just expect it to be very crowded. If crowds don't bother you, go for it. It would be very convenient to be right there and NOT have to drive after the 4th festivities on the esplinade if that is your plan. - And of course there are PLENTY of historic sites downtown to keep you busy for a few days.

My Aunt who lives in Cambridge and is much more city-oriented than I recommended the Mary Prentiss Inn (she says that this is where they recommend to most of their visiting friends). She also said that the Riverbend would probably provide some great viewing of the fireworks if you weren't planning on trying to fight the crowds on the Esplanade. Hope the link helps
