problem with the popular page?!?

June 19th, 2011
first off I'm not insulting any ones photos but have noticed a trend on the popular page that a lot of the photos have no favs not that many views and not many comments. When before you would need favs comments and views to make it. Anyways just thought I would point this out.
June 19th, 2011
I just clicked on five random shots and out of them two had less than 10 views one of them had only been viewed once.... so I see what you mean.

When I first read your post though I felt bad because I was on the popular page for the first time (that I know of this past week) and made me re-think if it was worthy...
June 19th, 2011
I kinda liked that it was all not-so-popular. I like the break in the trend, showing the hidden gems or lesser popular peoples. The monkeys are keeping us on our toes.
June 19th, 2011
Yes, thank you! I was going to post too. That is me with like 6 photos on the popular page. Before I was getting around 4 or 5 favs with much more views to get on the pp and then I have so many with no favs or views hardly. Something's up.
June 19th, 2011
Think you all may be correct. The images I saw had 15, 16 views no favs. They did have some comments, but it does seem a bit odd.
June 19th, 2011
Yep, I noticed it earlier today too and thought it was strange...
June 19th, 2011
Nod
Just checked, you are correct! But I think some of the no fav and less viewed ones are actually quite good :-)
June 19th, 2011
You have to take into account how many followers the people have too. The less followers, the easier it is to get on there with a couple views and comments.
June 19th, 2011
I agree with Viranod, there are still some good ones on the popular page. But how does a picture with 11 views, no faves and three comments make it?
June 19th, 2011
Now there is a landscape with four views, no comments, no faves.
June 19th, 2011
Cat
Hmmmm maybe the monkeys like them? I don't know....kinda enjoy this. I normally don't bother checking the popular page because it seems its always the same group who's photos get on there...this is spicig it up a little!
June 19th, 2011
Perhaps the problem is in the title. So few views and favs seem inconsistent with the designation of "popular;" I'd suggest "Monkeys' Favs," or some such. For the longest time I really thought they were the most popular. I'm happy to see different people displayed there - rather than the same recognizable people so often. I'd like a page that said something like - check out this person, but for more than the really new people. For that I love the game where we point out the nice photo of someone we spotted during the past week.
June 19th, 2011
P.S. Just in time - see this great topic:

Have you stumbled across a fabulous photo this week?
June 19th, 2011
Can I just say that I've always hated the popular page (yes I want on it, but I still don't think it's fair) for this very reason. Regardless of how good a photo is, the only way it will ever be on the popular page is if the photographer has a lot of followers. Some people are more reserved and don't feel comfortable participating in the discussions, browse and picks and what have you. Should they be not given the option of having their work show cased because of it?
I believe the magic monkeys should do a daily look through the photos via the browse by day option and post their favorites that way.
June 19th, 2011
@mej2011 that's not true, the algorithm punishes people with lots of followers, to make it easier for people with less followers to get on there.
June 19th, 2011
@mej2011 Believe me the more followers you have, the more difficult it is to be on the PP! Plus if you have a lot of followers, many of them are inactive ("dead") so your pictures don't have "that" many views regarding to your number of followers!
June 19th, 2011
@Scrivna @parisouailleurs

Well then there are a lot of people on here with thousands or millions of followers that are being punished, because the majority of the pictures I see on the popular page (aside from yesterday) always have at least 100 followers, at least.
June 19th, 2011
@mej2011 When i had 100 or 200 hundreds followers I was on the PP more often than now. But I think it's fair because the PP is a way to be known. There's so many discussions about this page that I think it has to be taken as "a cherry on the cake" as we say in France but in any way as a target or an award! Something you're happy to be on and when you're not, you're happy to be able to discover great pictures.
June 19th, 2011
I initially thought to be on a PP you have to be an ace member first, so i abandoned all hopes of getting there. After random clicks, i found out some non-ace members made it to the page. So i assumed they must be really good or they have all those high tech gadgets that captures high resolution images. So me being a low-tech P&S user thinks i wont be getting there at all. Anyway, I am enjoying this project PP or not. =)
June 19th, 2011
Maybe Ross is mixing it up for fun? It's nice to see photos that don't have a lot of views, actually! There are some really nice photos on here that nobody gets to see if only because the photographer is too shy or too new or (insert reason here) to gather Followers.
June 19th, 2011
What struck me as odd is how long the images are staying up. there is normally more changes to what's up there than there has been this weekend.
June 19th, 2011
@scrivener how about a person who has over 420 pictures ..one follower -me- and follows 8- has 3 fav.. who might be kind of shy...how will someone like that ever get to be on the pp. where people if they like his/her picture might click on it and leave a comment.
June 19th, 2011
I've had a mixed week with my photos some with little views and then some with a lot more views, comments and favs, but the ones that are on the pp are the ones with little views. Hmmm.
June 19th, 2011
i think,personally--Magic Monkeys don't count the comments or faves. to be in POPAGE..They judging the photos based on their professional skills,knowledge,experienced and mostly on their good and artistic taste. .:)
June 19th, 2011
@jodimuli ... yes! and depends on how many bananas they've eaten before!
June 19th, 2011
@relicsong ..... I've only made the PP twice since being on 365 from early Feb 2011. Both times my pix were over 50 "views" and many comments. I always thought that was how ones pix got on PP. Apparently things are changing or could the system be rigged.
June 19th, 2011
I noticed it was a bit odd...i have had the priveledge of the PP a few times, but noticed these last couple that they were photos of mine that were not really fav'd or viewed as normal for me to get on there...maybe they are trying to feature photos with less views/favs for a bit? In any case, it is fun to look and try to find new people to follow:)
June 19th, 2011
I just took a glance at the pop page to see what everyone was on about, and yes, a lot of the shots on there at the moment have few views, fav's or comments, but they're GOOD! Nice to have a chance to have a peek at shots I might otherwise not get to view:)
June 19th, 2011
@altadc I don't think that is true at all. The first month or two(and then I quit) of this project for me I was using a P&S and I remember being on the PP quite a bit.

Don't give yourself permission to fail.
June 19th, 2011
I'm not sure about the PP. I've chosen some of the people I follow based on a photo I saw on the PP. I've never been there, and I think I have a few shots that are worthy of it. But I don't sweat about it because it's just a handful of people who are browsing perhaps thousands of photos each day, and I believe it's partly a little bit of luck that a photo gets noticed. One thing I have noticed, though, is that once a person gets on the PP once, it is usually followed by lots of photos on there.
June 19th, 2011
@parisouailleurs
I suppose it depends on what you consider to be a lot then. To me one or two hundred is still alot. As @bruni said, what are the chances of a person with few followers being on the popular page? We all know how quickly photos change on the latest page, so that isn't going to be much help.
June 19th, 2011
@mej2011 the chance for someone with few followers is bigger than for someone who has more than few hundreds... People who have few followers and are not begginers are not "fishing" for followers I guess. Other wise it takes time but it's simple to get followers...
June 19th, 2011
I agree with many of you that there are good photos on the PP (I never said their was not and would never say that) just trying to figure it out. I love to look at the PP as well as the New faces (newbie PP) I was just stating that it seems odd that people with little view, comments, and favs would be on there always thought the PP was a stepping off point for the top 20. Have also noticed that the photos are staying on longer and they seem to be older photos as well. I know veiws, comments, and favs have dropped off a lot on the site do to people being busy and out in the wonderful weather. Maybe thats why or maybe its just what the magic monkeys like.
June 19th, 2011
@Scrivna Hey Ross, I have 300+ followers but half of them don't upload photos anymore. Should I be punished too? :-) Just a thought on how the algorithm goes.
June 19th, 2011
@mej2011 There are a lot of discussion about the hows, whats, and whys of the magic monkeys' choices. I for one, don't bother to ask about it anymore otherwise posting on here would no longer be fun. In my opinion, ANY photo that is on PP deserves to be there. It merits to be viewed and complimented taking into consideration that art is subjective. It's up to the viewer to judge for himself whether he can relate to the photo or not. That is fair enough for me... life is good, so let's be happy on 365. Cheers! :-)
June 19th, 2011
@bugik you can check dead accounts here http://25tolife.net/sites/365scanner/ and drop any that you follow but that wont help that they still follow you. there should be away to drop them from following you so it does not effect the algorithm but there is not :(
June 19th, 2011
@jodimuli @bugik Amen!!
June 19th, 2011
Very intersting discussion. I currently have a p & s, and not that many followers.. still only about 40.
BUt
to my amazement have been on PP.
I notice thee alot of the people I follow .. because they are GOOD. Which is why some of ethm have loads and loads of followers.. they still re-appear.

In conclusion I think there is a rough justice at work , but I do notice some photos stay up for days...
also just this week i started following 3 more people I spotted on PP.

June 19th, 2011
I'm on said PP right now and frankly was quite surprised as I didn't have many comments and no favs.

So what you gonna do, I'm popular you're not. ;0)

Vive la magie le singe.
June 19th, 2011
@bugik
And I respect your opinion.....
June 19th, 2011
I'm appreciative that *anyone* (insert: Magic Photo Monkies) takes the time each day or two to sort through the many photos and give us a selection of not-to-be-missed goodies. Compare them with the cross section of pictures being uploaded at any given moment, and it's easy to see some thought went into their selection. It's been a pleasure to find my photos on the PP from time to time, but it's just as important to spread around the love...and stop for a minute and say as much to others in the community!
June 19th, 2011
I don't mind knowing how the magic Monkeys choose the pics and I think is a good thing nobody knows exactly. Otherwise people would drop followers, or try to have more, etc. just to have more chances.
June 19th, 2011
@tolpol lol
June 20th, 2011
Just noticed another of my pics on the PP, 10 comments, 22 views, no favs.

Two in one day, you just can't stifle talent. :0)
June 20th, 2011
@meggageg totally not giving myself permission to fail. I have said I am enjoying this project PP or not. =))
June 20th, 2011
@tolpol - "I'm popular and you're not" - classic! LOL!!
June 20th, 2011
@tolpol Hahaha, love your reasoning! You're obviously a glass-half-full kinda person :)
