Name on photo

July 8th, 2011
I know I am full of questions tonight? Should I have my name on my photos. I see some photographs with a name "stamp" i guess it is. If so.... where and how do i do this. Thank you all so much for your support. I really started this a few days ago just because i was bored. 6 days later, as i go about my day, I constantly see in photographs. I am loving this. Thanks again!

Some people do this to protect their pictures. I don't do it because I don't think I'm good enough, yet, that people want to steal my pictures ;). But it's a personal decision. I guess you can just add your name with the text feature in Picnik or Picasa but most people have a watermark they always use and I don't know how they do that...

I don't stamp mine either. Sometimes the stamps are distracting. Plus if someone really wants to steal your photo, they can remove the stamp easily enough. :-) Welcome to 365 btw.

^^^ And if they remove it and you catch them, it's seen worse in the eyes of the law because they purposely removed ownership information.

I guess I just like to stick it to people... and as a professional, I have a reason to plaster my name on stuff.

Here is another discussion to read. Try to read them a few times and then refer back to them when you get familiar with whatever editing program you use. I realize that some programs do not have a layers function. That is essential to how I created my personal one but not for creating a simple watermark. Hope these help!

i don't watermark. there wil always be ways of getting around it if they really want, and if it is a resolution that is online it is usually fairly low, and i think it takes away from the image. just my thoughts.

@cchambers I agree. Especially those fancy stamp! Very awkward.

Here's a great read on why to use them:

And here's a useful way to do it with Photoshop: Create a custom brush (Photoshop) for watermarks tutorial: http://365project.org/discuss/tips-n-tricks/2798/create-a-custom-brush-for-watermarks

I've started doing it in the last week or so, not so much because I really think anyone will steal them (and they way I do it wouldn't stop that anyway), but because
(a) It makes me feel more professional :)
(b) it's fun! I try to 'hide' them in a ort of Where's Wally type way.

I don't think I'm that good, but I still mark my photos with my blog url anyway. I guess since websites like weheartit.com and Tumblr are becoming more popular, images get posted, reblogged, circulated, etc. I just like knowing that if someone likes the photo, they know where to find me :) Unless they deliberately remove the watermark... then that's a different story.

I do agree that they take away from the image :s and that people can easily remove them. I guess I just use it as another obstacle they'd have to pass.

Oh, and I just use Photoshop to throw some text on it (I don't do anything fancy).

I'v been thinking about watermarking my photos again (stopped when my hard Drive crashed) but if and when I do it I will use Gimp because it is free and make my own brush so I can have it any color and opacity.

here is a link to a youtube video on how to do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhFxvLa4C34

hope this helps you out
