The Unplanned/Serendipitous Shot

July 17th, 2011
Often when I head out to take pictures for the 365 Project I have an idea or place in mind, but the shot that is my favorite for the day is not what I planned at all.

What made me think of this idea was a shot of a dog from a couple of days ago:

What I had decided as my photographic target, just was not as nice as this.

Another idea took me three trips before I ended up with the planned shot, this one:

A fairly standard "postcard" shot of Seattle.

The other two trips I got:

and

What are your favorite Unplanned/Serendipitous Shots? Did you ever go back and get the planned shot?

my sister was showing my parents the bird houses in the back yard ---i was planning on going back to the lake in the later evening to take sunset shots, but the i went into the back yard to see the houses and this bird made itself very comfortable with me so close... he was bring lunch to the babies inside.

This doesn't really fit the nice peaceful theme going on here but it's my latest one that just sort of happened. I was wandering around the yard looking for a shot when I noticed my other half working behind a plastic sheet. I got him to grab something scary so he got his machete.

This happens to me nearly all the time. What I plan to do goes straight out the door the minute I walk out the door. Usually I see something I hadn't seen before, or I take a heap of photos and decide the very 1st one is the best.

So, in this pic I was trying to capture the moody sky behind me and myself but I'd forgotten I had the camera zoomed right in...so here it is. I like it.

For this day I had planned to take photos of Mount Blanc but instead caught this one of my daughter giving my son a kiss

I ahd no plans for this day but saw a squashed can in a puddle on the way to work and knew it would be the photo for the day

Most of mine are unplanned and are the result of taking my camera everywhere. I generally stage a shot when I'm feeling uninspired and struggling for a picture.

@amz87 "so he got his machete". I find that phrase more disturbing than the photo! :0)

I'd gone to the local park to take macro shots of flowers - which I did - but then took this one on my way back...

I ended up with this one when my cat wouldn't look at the camera:

And this was taken in desperation on the way home after a night out:

I hadn't really planned a picture for this day. I had run a few errands and was caught in a torrential downpour when I arrived home. Since I couldn't get out and unload the car I picked up my camera and shot the rain on the windsheild. I've never been crazy about this shot, but it pops up here and there on the discussion pages when someone's looking at my pictures for the first time. I think people like the blue windsheild tint and think it's photo processing when in fact the pic is SOOC.

I'm very similar in my approach. I usually head out the door with something in mind for the day's shoot, yet if something else happens to come along, I'll usually use that instead, mainly because my idea for the day will be there tomorrow. This butterfly might not.

I was walking around some ruins in Mesa Verde last week and we were at the reservoir about to walk down the path to the next thing to look at. I noticed this plant as I walked past and took a quick shot of it before I sped up to walk with my family.

Lots of cool shots here so far. Love how you can be somewhere like Mount Blanc or Mesa Verde and end up with something completely unrelated. The shots just outside the door are great too. Amazing what you can spot within 20 feet of stepping outside.

Keep them coming.
