I am doing a shoot for someone's Pet sitting business website. Any tips for shooting dogs with their owners? Thanks.

I had a photo shoot with my cat once. It turned out terrible. There was no interaction between me and my friend. Get the owners to look at their animal, interact in some way with them. They don't need to be looking directly at the camera for the picture to turn out OK.

Try using a second person (preferably someone the pets knows and likes) and have them distract the pet to make them look somewhere else...they don't do well looking at the camera..I think it's instinctual to fear an object pointed in your face. Even wild animals react to it--watch a bird for a while, it's fine, until you point the camera at it.

My daughter was to my right calling the cat and motioning with her arms. The cat looks interested, but is probably wondering why my daughter is making a fool of herself. :-)

Find out what motivates the pet: toys? food? squeaker? *usually food.
Use that item to get the attention of the pet.
Oh. And take your fastest lens.

Go with the flow. Animals don't just pose for you so be patient. Find out if they have any "key words"... for example, I said "Wanna go bye bye?" and got perky ears for this one...
