Photography seems to be one of those things that people are now expecting for free.. its not something I agree with in general, as if I do a job, I should get paid. Its how the world works!
I did like this illustrator's website, and his page response on requests to work for free. Dont click if offended by swearing, but I wish I had the guts to put this on the back of a business card.
Wow, it's like a word game of how many times can you use the F-word in a rant! Totally hilarious, and I wouldn't want to make him cross his in any way.
I was recently asked to "come take some photos" for a local exhibit/fair recently. Fortunately I was out of town and declined but for a moment I felt uncertain. I know the person asking but didn't intend to attend this event. She knew I had been out taking pictures for another group but didn't know that was planned as my monthly photowalk also. Maybe she thought I would be there anyway. I don't know.
I don't mind helping out but I guess as I am doing more localy and people are getting to know me I'd better find a way to handle future requests. @andycoleborn , getting paid in beer is fine if that is what your time during the graduation and later is worth. Don't forget you are using your resources too. I think we forget there is more work involed and get excited when someone asks us to take pictures for them. Bartering for your resources and time may be a valid option.
@dmortega haha for clarity, I should add I'm using the work's equipment and will put a meeting in my diary for a couple of hours then will use work's editing equipment so all in all.. free beer :-)....
lol - very funny, I don't have this problem as i'm not a professional, and also don't get asked to do stuff like this as i'm still very much a hobbyist, but as a teacher I do get asked all the time to do extras, after school at the weekends etc... and sometimes I wish I had the guts to add a bit of gratuitous swearing into my response just to see what the senior staff would say...
@blightygal i have same problem i was asked by a friend of a friend i never met to do face painting on 60 kids in 3 hours i told her how much it was per hour and i said on my own i canot do 60 kids in that time ..she tried to barter..wanted me to do it for £50 i said no she thought cos she was a friend of a friend id do it cheap...one asked me to do it for nothing and i could hand out bussiness cards..i done free work as experience on films b4 working 16 hour days doing more than makeup for experience as you have to but i done that never again..say would you go to work for nothing? say well neither will i

@sdpace Sis? ;o)
He has a point and just a tad bit of a massive anger issue!
