Selling a blown up photo.

July 20th, 2011
Hi,

I have looked through the discussion boards but can't find anything on this topic. If there is already this discussion somewhere please give me the link.

I woke up this morning to find that someone actually wants to commission a poster size photo and I was not expecting this response as I have never sold any photos or even tried as I am still a novice.

Anyway, does anyone know where or how is the best place to get your photo blown up to poster size ensuring quality?

How should I do the whole process of selling it?

I have no idea but you should probably say where you're from so people can help you :)

I have used mpix.com to make large prints-- 11X14's and a couple of posters for my kids, and I've always been happy with the quality. I have also heard (although I've never done it) that the art supply store Michael's works with pictures; in particular one friend told me they have a paper treatment that ensures the photo won't wrinkle or pucker from humidity.

@daizynorth Thanks. Will look at mpix - not heard of them. Will have to check Michaels out but would like to compare cost and quality with other places.

@emeraldboots I use Bay Photo Lab for my printer and they are wonderful! They are the printer I use for my website and their quality is fantastic. http://www.bayphoto.com/

mpix is awesome and so www.winkflash.com (I just wouldn't do 4x6 with winkflash, but the big ones are brilliant!) CONGRATS!!

Need to check how many megapixels your camera has and how large your file is. Blowing something up this large risks pixelation.

@autumnseden @5unflow3r @meggageg @cfitzgerald @smapp Thanks for your feedback. The image is 3.6 MB and 2800x3720 pixels from a 10MP Camera.

mpix is who I use, and I use them alot, they do a fantastic job and are quick....I second slater on pixel....but with mpix they will show you how big they will reproduce without jepordizing the quality.....

@emeraldboots Bay Photo will also warn you if the size you are going for will not work for the size of your file.

@emeraldboots Shutterfly has that feature as well (letting you know what sizes you can get from your photo file). I haven't gotten a poster from them ...that's the company I usually order prints from though. Maybe it's safer to go with one that people have used for posters. :-)

@emeraldboots "Better yet, you can blow up a 10 megapixel print to 20x30 for a good quality print. " http://www.photographyicon.com/enlarge/

Hi, it has been a long day of learning that Picassa is not all that wonderful! I have been playing around with my software from Olympus and was able to make the RAW file even bigger. Now, waiting for feedback from Bay Photos who have only been the only people to communicate so far.

@smapp I will check them out.

Lastly, should I sign the photo?
