print size

A friend has asked me to frame one of my photos. I am in the process of ordering a print and will be able to mat it myself to the specific size I choose so matching a mat is not a problem. My problem is figuring out what size to order - I'm using mpix based on a recommendation I saw in another discussion. When I select the size, say 9 by 12 - and then see how it looks - it's cropped. Is there a way to figure the best proportions to match the actual photo and avoid cropping. I figure if I wanted cropping, I've already done that. I want it to look like what I posted. It'd be ok to have some white space because I can mat to meet that. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Most digital photograph files are a 2:3 ratio, but it depends on your camera. If it is the standard 2:3, then you can print any multiple of that without cropping. To check, look at the number of pixels length and the number of pixels width of your image, and you can determine the ratio (if the length is 50% more than the width, you have a 2:3). HTH

@jinximages Thanks a lot - I had started looking at the pixel ratios and tht. that was the best approach, so I appreciate hearing from you that this is what I shd. do. Most of them fit fine, but on a couple I did some cropping to get to my final photo, so they don't fit to standard print sizes. I looked at whether they were off on length or width and then tried to find a closer match in print ratio and I think it's going to work out fairly well. Thanks for always being so helpful.

@reba YW. If you have a custom-cropped image, just have it printed on the normal 2:3 ratio (or closest ratio like you're doing) and cut the white off yourself. That's what I do with custom print sizes (though usually I simply avoid cropping to a non-standard size).
