Anyone have experience with Micro Four Thirds?

July 21st, 2011
I've been researching for a new camera purchase. I have a Nikon D50 that I've had several years with a Sigma 18-50mm/3.5-5.6 and a Sigma 70-300mm/1:4-5.6 lenses. I am a dentist and also use it with a customized intraoral/macro setup designed and marketed by a dental company. I have used several different intraoral setups and this is by far the best rig I've ever used. I will continue using the D50 in the office for dental photography even if I switch to something else for my amateur photography in the "real world."

I have been pleased with the D50, but would like something less bulky and heavy for everyday photography.

I am very interested in the micro four thirds technology, and specifically in the Olympus PEN E-PL2 line. Would like to get some feed back from folks who have used them in different situations/lighting/environments.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have the e-pl2 and I love all the cool things you can do on the camera alone! I shot with just my lympy for 365 for about 2 months before the nikon 5100 came out. I loved the size, its the reason I bought it, then once I got it I loved the color pop and dramatic effects and macro settings! Its now the camera I keep in my car so when I am out and see something I can grab a pic..IM a nikon whore so the 5100 is my go to camera now for photo shoots and such.
I think you would really LOVE the camera if you give it a shot!!
Most of my april and may folder was taken with the lympy if you want to see what all it can do :)

Thanks Jennifer...looking at some of your photos answered a lot of my questions. I keep reading that it doesn't get good action shots and is noisy in low light. Your softball photos are about as much action as I'm going to be trying to capture.

What is your experience in low light situations?

Other than my intraoral photos (think before/after shots), my photography is purely amateur and just for fun.

And hey, we're practically neighbors! I live in the very NE corner of Mississippi and travel to Huntsville frequently.

@rebeldds I've got the E-P2 and i absolutely love it - it's my only camera, i carry it around every day with me. I use the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 lens so low-light isn't a big problem for me - check out this night shot as an example:

The Panny 20mm lens is almost worth buying a Panasonic G1 (or G2) for over the Pen, as it's the kit lens for those cameras, just to save the extra expense of buying it anyway. It's an absolutely beautiful lens -- 98% of my shots are taken with it and i love it more every day. I've just bought another manual lens (a 40mm 2.0 M-Rokkor) to use as well, i'm just waiting for the adapter to arrive.

So yeah, i'm a total Micro Four Thirds convert!

@rebeldds Heads up that they just announced new models in the EP and EP-L liness, coming out in August. You might want to check them out and decide if they're worth waiting for. Here's an EP3 preview: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/06/olympus-pen-ep3-improves-almost-everything/

I am one of the rare people here who has a 4/3rds system on my Olympus DSLR. I have not one complaint about my camera and would love to have the pen also, but cannot swing the cost of two cameras in one year. I actually have been using olympus digital since the 90's through work and personal and have not one thing bad to say about them, they are a solid company without a sexy name.

I bought the PEN 1 in May and have been very happy with it. I bought it not only to upgrade from my point and shoot, but for a trip to Italy, and it did everything in Italy that I was hoping for. The lens it came with was reasonable for both close up and distance shots and because it telescopes it fit easily into my sholder bag, it's light and allows me to manually focus. I want to get the optional viewfinder because looking in the back of the camera is one of the things I wanted to upgrade, but until I set aside the money to do this it's still ok. The built in features are nice and I am still exploring what all it can do. I have been shooting with it since May 14 if you want to look at my shots.

@paulv Thanks for that info Paul. I would definitely be upset if I bought the EP2 next week and the 3 came out less than a month later. I had actually had the thought that I should check the Olympus website to see if they had any new products coming out before I made a purchase, but had not acted on that thought yet.

Thanks all for the input. I enjoyed looking at your photos and that gave me a better idea what I can do with a micro 4/3. Looking forward to this purchase, but gonna wait until August when the new models come out!
