Sensor cleaning...I need advice!

July 25th, 2011
Okay so here's my problem, I have a dirty sensor, don't know how I'm very careful when I change lenses...but these things happen. I live in a country town and no-one does sensor cleaning here, I would have to send it away to Canon to have it cleaned, that could take months, with no guarantee it will come back any better:(
So should I buy a Sensor cleaning kit and do it myself and if so does anyone have any good advice on a good kit to buy.
I would really appreciate any input on this as I am at my wits end...Thanks:)

Vicki, I've not had to attempt it, but hoping that this article might help - http://www.digital-photography-school.com/do-you-clean-your-own-sensor
Good luck!

Vicki...I nearly died when I first had to do this but it gets easier...steady hand and steady nerves. I bought my kit from a guy in Dubbo. (He's on the interwebby thing...look up sensor cleaning) you don't actually touch the sensor when you clean it his way...you charge a brush with puffed air and drag the brush near but not on the sensor. Best bit is he guarantees that if it doesn't work he'll do a complete camera clean for nothing.

@veekay Also...I should have said...before you decide that your sensor needs cleaning have a really good look at the back of your lens.

@veekay I followed a YouTube tutorial and did mine, you need a rocket blower. I started by taking a picture of a white pieces of paper and viewing it at 100% on my computer to see the dust etc and then i followed the tutorial. Mine is now perfectly clean, it was really dusty and dirty. I would only use the blower if that doesnt work then i would send it away to be cleaned.. Good luck xx

@tashachawner @tori3012 @swilde Thankyou all very much, I have tried a blower and I have seen the article, that's what prompted me to attempt it myself. I know it's the sensor because I've tried the photo of the white paper with both my lenses and the same marks appear. Thanks heaps for your advice:)

I just use a rocket blower. I've still got some dirt but it's no where near as annoying and not really noticeable at all. I only used to find the same blobs in pictures of the sky and I was quite upset when I first noticed it! Bought a rocket blower and problem sorted. I do wonder how much it may cost to get it properly cleaned though? May be worth investing in that every so often, but for now it's not a problem. I hope you get it swiftly sorted! xx

I just did mine, it was a piece of cake. Remember, you are not actually cleaning the sensor but the glass which overlays the sensor. I used these swabs:

It took five swabs to get mine clean, but then I had never done it in about six years of owning this camera. The results were awesome and I would never hesitate to do it again.

My opinion only, your results may vary. :)
