Waterproof Bag

Ok, I have a question for everyone. I am going on vacation next week sometime and was wondering what if anything 365ers use to protect their investment. I was thinking about going kayaking, and am a bit apprehensive taking my camera. Now, do not get me wrong, this is not white water rafting, my only concern is dropping camera into the water. Is there any suggestions for this scenario? I honestly do not want to participate in this excursion if I do not bring my camera. I think this vantage point would make for some interesting perspectives.

Thanks for your advice.

Insurance?! Apparently my home insurance would cover my DSLR even if I accidentally dropped it into the sea...(as long as I don't damage it at my home address, it's covered).

However, if I was going kayaking, I would probably take my tiny point and shoot - easier to put away etc (and less upsetting if things DID go pearshaped!). You can actually buy waterproof cases for some point and shoots (my friend has one for his Canon Ixus - he took it diving at got great shots of sealife etc).

or something else similar is available, i'm sure. I have seen the hard plastic cases for that purpose. I don't have an opinion on how well they work, but I was thinking the same thing yesterday when I bought a raincover for my camera so i could shoot in the rain. :)

Last month we went kayaking on the river Ardeche (in France).
We got a waterproofed barrel to put our stuff in and the strongest advice to only open it when we had both of our feet on dry land and that was good advice. The inside of the barrel stayed dry when we turned up-side-down.

I believe that this comes with a guarantee that they will replace your camera if it gets damaged by water whilst in use.

you can pick up a waterproof p&S for under $50 nowadays. Check walmart or other discount stores if ordering online is not fast enough.

I use a Karrimore waterproof bag. Its got a 1000mm hydrostatic head, so there is no water getting in there! Obviously, I can't take any photos while it is in there, but I can transport it in there and there is no way it is getting wet.

i went kayaking recently and didn't want to take my dslr, so i bought a cheap (£12 i think but buy one get one free!) disposable underwater camera, and i was actually really happy with the quality of the results - check out my second album to have a look

I take a large clip and attach my point and shoot to my life jacket. You can get a waterproof bag that has a clip at most outdoor stores. I would not personally take my Dslr out or my iPhone though. I have yet to tip but the paddle can make some drips depending on tide and wave. Also if p&s gets wet it may dry out if put in a bag of rice for several days (this was tested from waterfall wetness)

I cannot stress clipping or pining camera and keys to yourself!!!!

I have a great waterproof Fuji P&S & use it all the time & it was just over $100. It comes with a floaty lanyard strap too! Check out my project...I have some underwater shots & in water shots from it too.

Thanks everyone, I am now thinking that I may pass on the kayaking for now and keep my feet firmly planted on the beach....I really do want to bring the dslr and will have to look into these water proof bags that have been suggested. Thanks again.
