I'm temporarily using a widescreen monitor. Love it for the internet, word processing, etc., but it distorts my photos making them appear wider. As I'm looking at replacing this loaner I'm seeing that so many of the monitors are wide screen.
Do you use widescreen monitors? What can be done about the distortion? Any recommendations or advise would be appreciated.
@bobfoto I've tried that and there's no difference. I could be doing the wrong thing, but I don't see anything other than resolution and it doesn't get better when I change it. Thanks for the suggestion though.
@herussell Another thought - it could be that your video driver has the setting for your previous screen and doesn't have any widescreen settings. You might have to find new drivers.
When selecting a resolution you want to make sure it looks like it is wide screen in the preview box. It should be 16:9 or 16:10 ratio and not 4:3.
Something like 1280x720 or 1280x768 are common lower resolutions. I run a 23 inch at 1920x1080 which is full HD resolution and everything looks perfect.
What is the resolution you are currently set at? @herussell
If all you're seeing is 1024 and 800 then it's down to needing new "drivers" for your graphics card. Those are both 4:3 resolutions, but... seems someone's already pointing you in the right direction, so I'll hush :)
@eyebrows Thank you. I'm a bit disappointed to hear that. I don't think it's as easy to replace graphics cards in the laptop. I have the wee laptop for travel, but it's hard to see the screen when it's on it's docking station (hence the monitor). This may give me an excuse to have oddly skewed photos when I choose to blame it on the monitor.
Ah I see so it's jacked into the VGA out on the laptop?
Well, "drivers" are software, and it should be possible to update them. I'd try popping along to the laptop manufacturer's website and see what they have in the way of downloads - the laptop screen itself though, is that wide or "square"?
Well, if the thing's old enough to have a non-wide screen itself, I'd say you might be out of luck with even finding a section for it on the website. Worth a look, mind. I too am not a fan of widescreen monitors! They're no good for web browsing or coding, pfft.
@eyebrows It's 2 years old. Not new, but not ancient. Okay, two years is old these days :( Thanks for everything. I at least understand the problem better after this discussion.
@mallocarray Sorry Joshua. Your reply got lost in my inbox. I really appreciate your willingness to help.
Actually I think I've figured out the solution. I was only borrowing the current widescreen monitor. Through shopping I learned that some monitors have a feature that automatically adjusts the aspect ratio (to solve this problem). Tomorrow I'm ordering one that has this feature.
Thank you all for your help

This is just a temporary monitor, but I don't want the same problem with a new monitor because I'm not knowledgable about how to fix it.
