I'll start by admitting that I'm not a big fan of the city of Valencia, so I'm not a particulary unbiased source. That said, I would recommend visiting the "City of Arts and Sciences", which has an art museum, a science museum and, my favourite, a nice aquarium (good place to practice "underwater" photography without getting wet).
The city's historic district has some interesting architecture: the town hall building ("Ajuntament"), the old silk exchange ("Llotja de la Seda"), the Quart towers, etc...
Then, of course, there are the beaches and the gastronomy (birth place of paella). And I'm sure there is probably a lot more, not only in the city itself but in the surrounding towns.
I'll tag Maribel ( @maribelrivera ). Being from Madrid, she's got better access to Valencia and might be more helpful. (I live in the south and don't get up to the east coast that often).
@andrewdearling I lived just outside Valencia for 3 years, just have a walk around and get a feel for the place, if you head towards the El Corte Inglais ( supermarket) and if you ask anyone they will tell you were that is, you will find a lovely park and walk ways etc. I havent lived there for about 5 years now and they were doing a lot of work in and around the area for the Louis Vutton cup when i lived ther.. Also there are some fabulous places slightly inland..
I´m sorry but I´m not going to be of much help in this opportunity. I only was in Valencia once...the capital, I mean, I went there lots of times but to the beach villages...I´m afraid I only know the places David mentioned, which are the mandatory visits...I cannot give you much more advice, sorry, :(
oh i looov ed Valencia, spent only day there so was visiting in a rush but city is beautiful and agreeing with David "City of Arts and Sciences", is a must see! i went to the aquarium part as you cant do everything in one day.. probably even three wouldnt be enough.. You must try paella when you are there and of course if you like tapas too! (but try to go off the tourist streets as the best ones are in tiny little places hidden in narrow back streets...
I had to look up to see if there was another Valencia because I only knew of the one in California. But, as I suspected, there is another one! Have fun in Spain! I have never been!
