Camera Dilemma

September 4th, 2011
So right now im shooting with basically a "high end" point and shoot, it does alright, but about 70% of my photos are blurry just because the shutter speed is SO slow, ive made it work for my project and for the photo shoots ive done so far, but this month i have 3 family photo sessions and 2 sessions for toddlers and im scared that all of my photos are going to be blurry as i chase the toddlers and attempt to get an entire family to hold perfectly still.
so here is my dilemma, i could possibly come up with $400 right now to buy a new camera OR if i wait for christmas i can come up with $1000 and get the nikon D-90 i planned on buying

what would you do? can i really get something decent for $400?

I have a Panasonic Lumix that I am very happy with...I have really only read good reviews on them as well.

I had a similar dilemma a couple of years back. I jumped into buying a cheaper DSLR than i really wanted...result - it didn't really tick all the boxes and whilst it has tided me through, i've ended up waiting longer for the DSLR i really wanted! Are you able to hire a D-90 in the meantime until Christmas? This way you get to enjoy its benefits and learn how to use it before making the larger cash outlay?

@sparkle hire a D-90?

I agree with @sparkle, I'd rent a camera for your sessions! Most pro photographers rent gear, and it gives you a chance to test run the D-90!

here in the UK there are pleny of options for hiring. for 3 days it's about £30-£40 - it would give you a chance to play with one and still get the benefits at your family functions. Depends if the functions all fall together or not...If that's not an option I would hang out for the camera you want!!

What lens are you using? I would suggest looking into your lens options. The lenses with larger apertures are usually more expensive, but that solves the slow shutter problem. You can use a larger aperture and a faster shutter. AND larger apertures make beautiful background. Do you have the nifty fifty?? You can pick up a 50mm lens for under $200, and they take beautiful portraits!

The only lens I've ever used in my project is the 50mm 1.4... Take a look, if you like.

@sweett by high end point and shoot i mean my camera is NOT a DLSR so lenses are not an option

have just faced exactly your position.
In the end I waited and have indeed bought the Nikon D90 within the last month.
Still got loads and loads and loads to learn but am thrilled with its speed and its sharpness of pictures.
Do try one out in your hands .. I went to a camera shop and that enabled me to feel how several felt in my fingers.
it also allows you to point and shoot to start with so you can explore bit by bit and still turn in good shots.
( i opted for just one lens ..tamron 15-200mm so I didn't need to keep thinking about changing lenses , even tho it made it a mite heavier)
Do'nt know if that helps you at all.

Nikon 5100 body is $ 600. It is what I use and sits in between your two price points.

@smapp $400 is the most i could come up with at the moment

@june thanks! im glad to hear you like your D-90!

ohhh, I wasn't paying enough attention. I apologize!
In that case, you can find a good starter dslr for $400! I prefer Canon, so I'd reccomend the Canon Rebel. But I'm definately not trying to open the Canon vs. Nikon debate. lol
When it comes to quality of photos and whatnot, i think it's better to focus on getting great lenses, rather than getting a higher end dslr with the kit lens... Save that christmas money for lenses!

This is the site i got my camera from. It was refurbished, but only 13 photos had ever been taken on it. It also came with a warranty, and I've had no problems, even after 30,000 photos...

And if you can splurge a little, this lens is totally worth it:

I found my D90 online for around $400 w/ a kit lens. You might find a deal like that if you look around.

Blurry photos is due to long exposures with low light conditions. not meant to contradict the advises given here as they are indeed awesome, but if you have 5 sessions coming up, rent money could be used to pay your Dslr already. No use in getting another camera then upgrading later on. I would suggest get a loan from mum =) and buy separate cam from lens. @brandywalker365

thank you everyone! Im going to shop around and see what i can get a D-90 for and if its above my range right now then i will wait instead of upgrading to something cheaper and regretting it in a few months
