San Fran Meet Up and California Travel Tips

September 14th, 2011
I will be in California from Oct 4-16th and would love to meet up in San Francisco on Saturday October 15th.

Also from the 7th until the 14th I have a rental car and am looking for suggestions on where to go, what to see, things to shoot, and things I should not miss. My range is from the Oregon border to Big Sur and the Pacific to the Sierra Nevadas (I have been to Fresno, Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia previously). I plan on putting all the great locations on a road map and hitting the open road with no real agenda.

Thanks in advance.

@autumnseden and @emsabh I hope the 15th works best for you. It seems my plane leaves on Sunday the 16th which makes a meet up at 6:00 a.m. a bit much to ask of you.

@brumbe I would recommend going down to Half Moon Bay and while there check out the Mill Rose Inn Bed and Breakfast very beautiful little B&B and they might let you take photos...you can also take HWY 1 down the coastline and hit up Santa Cruz and soak up all the shoreline

Oh yeah!!! I am so excited!!! =D I already have you in INK! (hehe) for 10/15 and can't wait! Let me start thinking about where to send you! One of my favorite spots right off the top of my head is Santa Cruz which happens to be the location of Natural Bridges State Beach. The town is cute with some amazing houses right on the coast, it has the gorgeous beach AND it involves driving along the coast. I would shoot for a weekday if you can since it can get pretty busy on the weekend:

@loztsoul I was typing my recommendation at the same time as you! Great minds!!! =D
September 14th, 2011
@autumnseden LOL love it! I don't even live there anymore but I will always have that part of me :)
September 14th, 2011
@loztsoul Two words: (well, two more...) ROAD TRIP! You should come! ;)
September 14th, 2011
I am nowhere near there but I am looking forward to your photos from your trip!
September 14th, 2011
Too bad you can't make it up Seattle way......
September 14th, 2011
Oh San Fran, how awesome! I'm meeting up with some of the LA gang this weekend! Yahoo for road trips!
September 14th, 2011
@sdpace I am DYING to get back down to LA and do a meetup with the gang down there!
September 14th, 2011
Uh oh. we're now a gang? ;-)
@robinwarner @sdpace @autumnseden
September 14th, 2011
@webfoot of course we are, and @robinwarner is the head of the gang
September 14th, 2011
@webfoot @alecio As long as there is no illegal initiation process, I am in! I just wish I was closer so I could come out and play more often!
September 14th, 2011
@shadesofgrey --- There are quite a few on here that are within driving distance to Seattle. Set up a meetup for the Seattle area group. I'll come.
September 14th, 2011
@sdpace you are in LA and if I recall going to the UCLA game on Saturday?
September 14th, 2011
@alecio @webfoot I am so jealous of your roving street photography gang.
September 14th, 2011
@shadesofgrey One day I will make it there.
September 14th, 2011
@brumbe yes, just a visit to LA. Actually Pasadena
September 14th, 2011
All I can say is, you have to go to the Buena Vista and get an original Irish coffee! Nothing like it on a foggy San Fransisco day! That is also where the famous San Fransisco trolly comes down the hill! Great shots there! I love San Fran! Have a great time, Paula!!
September 14th, 2011
Enjoy SF... let me know when you get to LA.
September 14th, 2011
@sdpace ooohhhh, to be in Pasadena for a game at the Rose Bowl. I have to be honest that I really hope Texas wins, and I will be sitting here in Philly watching on tv.
September 16th, 2011
@brumbe I didn't read everything above but consider Capitlola, a short distance from Santa Cruz. Beautiful pastel houses on the ocean and a cute town. ALso, my favorite - Carmel By the Sea, and Carmel Village. First has a beautiful ocean bay cove with surfers and amazing scenery, the second has mountains and wineries. @autumnseden I am clearing my schedule for an early Saturday morning - I have a commitment that afternoon. Are you staying in SF? Autumn, do you anything sketched out yet?
September 16th, 2011
@emsabh I will put that on my map. I actually have a road map with sll recommendations written down. I am staying in Pacific Grove one night near Lovers Point Park.
September 16th, 2011
@brumbe There is a great breakfast spot in PG called Red Cafe http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-red-house-cafe-pacific-grove and also Toasties. Both serve great plates that will keep you full almost all day!
September 16th, 2011
@orangecrush I am adding that to *my* places to visit!!! =D
September 16th, 2011
@emsabh I love Carmel and Capitola, too! Great suggestions.

As for Saturday morning, I live in Sacramento so it is only about 1.5-2 hours driving for me to get there. I can get there as early as you all want and stay late as you want, too. I don't have plans to stay the night specifically (not in my budget) but I have Sunday off so I can recover then. =) I don't have anything specifically in mind yet but I am not sure what the mood will be and what the weather will be like. Depending on how many people are coming, I am happy to keep it kind of open and just pile in my car and explore! I have a Honda Civic that seats 4 comfortably, 5 if we don't mind being a little cozy and it has a huge trunk! There is always Golden Gate Park, the Palace of Fine Arts, the Marin Headlands, Union Square, Pier 39, Haight... I could go on and on! Do you live in SF? I also have a membership to the California Academy of Sciences so I can get myself and one more of us in for free if the weather turns on us.
September 16th, 2011
@autumnseden @emsabh I am at any and all suggestions. And remember early to you is three hours later in the day for me, so time is not that huge of an issue. I just want to return the lenses to 428 3rd Street by 4 p.m.
September 16th, 2011
@brumbe @autumnseden I live in Oakland and worked in the city for 20+ years. There's really a lot to see and do (Autumn I know you have seen a lot of it!) I probably have to off to my afternoon commitment by noon, so early morning is open. If we are looking at that time, some scenics of SF from Treasure Island, Marin Headlands might be fun. The National Cemetery and Presidio is cool, depends on fog (although technically it *should* be rare. The weather this year has not been cooperative :-() This Mission district murals, gritty CHinatown, italian north beach (with a GREAT foccacia store) - yup, tough choices! I have a Mini cooper convertible, seats 4 snugly, but the roof down it's kinda amazing :-)
September 16th, 2011
@brumbe @emsabh It sounds like you would be the best tour guide Art! I have not been to a number of the places you mentioned so it would be a lot of fun to explore new territory! I know that I have not actually been to Treasure Island (just thru!), the National Cemetery or the Mission district murals. A tour of the city in the Mini would be fun but I will say right away that I will have to sit up front because I can get car sick. Maybe we could all meet at the huge parking lot across the street from the Metreon (easy on and off of the Bay Bridge), you can guide the morning tour and take us around and then drop us off at the Metreon so we can either walk or drive around from there? Dropping the lenses off by 4 would not be an issue. =)

I am getting so excited!!!
September 18th, 2011
@autumnseden @brumbe it's definitely all walkable from that location. There's a Peet's right near there (used to work about a block away) and I can head out when I need to. Looking forward to meeting everyone!
September 18th, 2011
@emsabh Sounds perfect!

I gathered this information together for Melissa Pike and thought I would share it with you here.

Here are some of my favorite spots at Golden Gate Park:

California Academy of Sciences - http://www.calacademy.org/
I have a membership here so I can get you in for free. It will save you one adult admission if your husband is there at least. Adults are $29.95. This is where I get a lot of my butterfly shots.

Across from the Academy is the Japanese Tea Garden. - http://japaneseteagardensf.com/

Admission here is $7. I have not been here during the Summer but I am starting to see some fall colors here so it might have some of its own colors starting now too.

Conservatory of Flowers - http://www.conservatoryofflowers.org/

It is not HUGE but it is good for a couple of hours if you are in the mood for flowers. Admission is $7. This is where I got my water lily shots.

The National AIDS Memorial Grove is within walking distance of the Conservatory and is open to the public. http://www.aidsmemorial.org/

There are loads of places to visit here!

We can also visit the Palace of Fine Arts if you want to visit somewhere outside of Golden Gate Park - http://www.palaceoffinearts.org/Welcome.html. It is within walking distance of Crissy Field which is one of my favorite spots to shoot the Golden Gate Bridge.
