Find A Grave Photography

For those of you with a little spare time out there, might I suggest this could be both a little fun and rewarding?

Find A Grave

I signed up 3 1/2 years ago, and get emails from people working on memorials/genealogy/etc who would like pictures of headstones. It never takes long, and I find it to be quite rewarding - and it gives me a chance to go visit my mother. :)

I do the same. I find the monuments can be great subjects for photography plus there's the added benefit of helping someone else find their ancestor's graves. I can combine my love for photography, cemeteries and genealogy all in one trip!

@photonut Exactly! :) I haven't had an opportunity to do it for a little while now, but I'm really looking forward to getting back into it this weekend!

I went to a ghost town last weekend and took several photos in a pioneer cemetery. I think they have beautiful sculpture and headstones. Some of the graves have cool looking fences around them. I am going to another ghost town this weekend and hope to get more photos from another pioneer cemetery. I love to go walking throught the graveyards because there is some really cool art in them.

Last time I took a picture of a grave, who is related to me, a groundskeeper approached me and asked me what I was taking pictures for. After being told I had to get permission from the office, and that there was a sign at the front prohibiting photography, I was a little rattled.

But it's a great idea being able to find a photo and not have to travel far away to see it.

@jeancarl I've never heard of photography being prohibited for graves! That's so strange to me. I wonder what the reasoning was.

This looks quite interesting. How frequently do you get asked to take a photo?

@lisjam1 A lot of it depends on where you live. I started this before moving back to this town; where I was living previously, I'd get 3 or 4 requests from the same person at once, usually once a month or so. As of yesterday, I took 7 unclaimed requests for local graves, but I live in a small community.

@jessicaelaine So do people place their requests and the photographer marks that they are claiming them so that several people aren't doing it at once. I'm considering signing up. It reminds me a bit of geocaching because I'm sure it will take me places in my own community that I haven't really explored, and that's part of the fun. Adding a camera makes it even more fun.

@lisjam1 People place their requests and only one person can claim each. I believe claims stay active for 14 days and then it's released for re-claiming.
