Sppedlite, Free, To A Good Home

September 19th, 2011
Thats a request by the way not an offer, hope I didn't mislead you there :)

So I've tried for the last two nights to get a good water crown picture and despite my inventiveness and numerous rolls of tape I have to say I failed.

A new piggy bank fund is being set up for a speedlite as I type. Unless of course any of you feel like donating one?

No?

*sighs* It was worth a try!

Well here is my (rather impressive, if I say so myself) failure.

Cheer me up and share your photo failures :-D

Dang, that is impressive! If you want to see my failures, just look at my album!

@emmar84 Shades of Grey beat me to it.....check out my albums......full of not just failures but EPIC failures
September 19th, 2011
Wow, amazing set-up! I did nothing of that kind... Respect for all the effort you've put into this!

@shadesofgrey Your album does not have failures in it, and I'm not saying because I'm intimidated by the gun weilding man in it!

@grammyn Well now I just feel lied to, Katy, I had a look through your album and did not come across any epic failures

@geertje Thank you Geertje, unfortunately even with all those lights and the ceiling lights (4 spot lights were directed onto the area) it was still too dark

Not to condescend but did you have your on camera flash up and working, if you have one?
September 19th, 2011
@shadesofgrey Yes, I was using my on camera flash but with the lens I have (18-200mm) most of the light was blocked and caused extra shadows.

@emmar84 I love your set up. It would work so well with a speed lite. I use a very similar set up but must admit it never works as well without the speed lite. I did manage to capture the droplets once without all this ... but I was in an extremely sunny conservatory at the time. Make sure you keep an eye out on ebay and you never know what a bargain you might get. Keep on giving this a go - you'll get there.

Maybe try a cheaper version? Jessops do their own flash unit for Nikon an Canon at about £80. Dunno what they're like though.

Cheaper compared to other brands, very powerful, simple to use, and great results:

If you can't succeed with your elaborate set-up, there is no hope for me. I think I'll retire from the field and enjoy the work of the more skilled!
September 20th, 2011
@emmar84 You are too kind. I know I have so much more to learn and am not sure I even qualify to be a beginner.

Sue
lol! is that an ice cube in the zip lock bag? I must say...you have better lighting than I do! mine would have flashlights taped up and/or candles!! no seriously..you shouldn't play with peoples emotions like that...I came flying in to view this post because I thought you were giving away a speedlight!! I think I am needier than you are for one..so I hereby announce myself in open competition with you! lol...great shot btw!!

Hilarious! Yes, I have many failed attempts - after spending hours trying to create something. Still don't have a water drop photo I am really happy with. I think your home inventions look as crazily rigged as mine. Great post and it gave me a chuckle. I think we can ALL relate!

@wormentude @gurry
I probably will have to buy a cheaper version but even that won't be immediate as I will need to save for it, hopefully I'll have one before Christmas :)

@kezzam Thank you Kerry, I will keep trying, my main problem is most of our bulbs are energy saving ones so not ideal for casting bright light. Hopefully some new light bulbs will help until I can buy myself more camera toys!

@roth Sorry to get your hopes up Sue, If I see any free speedlites I'll let you know and maybe rock paper scissors can decide who gets it.
It is a ziplock bag but it has water in it not an ice cube.

@mackena Glad to have raides a smile for you today. The stand is actually my pots and pans stand (tehy were all on the units whilst I was using their home for my trials. The lights I used on the left is what we technically refer to as "the light on a stick" not any more elaborate than it sounds but useful when we go in the attic, Then the light on teh right is actually my bedside light with the lamp shade removed, finally in the middle is a head torch normally used when we go camping!
