pack my bag for the night life?

October 1st, 2011
Nuit Blanche is on in Toronto tonight. Contemporary art all over the city from sun down to sun up. Street closures (wide spaces), low light and thousands of people. I am planning on filling up my card!

I have two questions...lend me your know-how?

1) If you didn't want to take all your gear, what lens would you take with you.
50mm? 18-55 IS? or the 300mm? (I've pretty much ruled out the 300 I think)
It's going to be very windy here today and tomorrow so I think I'll leave my tripod in our hotel room. Going to use what I can find on the street...that is less likely to sway.

2) Any last minute tips for settings (Canon) for low light city shots? I've tried very few and if I completely mess up all my shots, I won't be a happy camper!

Fifty would be my choice, it is the best of those in low light. It's also easiest to carry. I'd use Av mode, set ISO to 400 (grain is still tolerable) and maybe f2.5 -ish (or even lower). I'd also use spot metering mode to get proper exposure at that exact point I want... the average modes suck because there will be really dark with bright lighted spots.
Disclaimer: I'm not a pro, just saying what I would do :-)

50mm for me as well, for the same reason and its a good length for street photography. Depending on your camera, ISO 800 probably works fine.
I'd take my tripod anyways, but if you really think it'll be no use then don't. It just allows for interesting longer exposures.

High ISO, fast shutter, wide aperture. the 50mm would be a great choice because of the aperture variety. Good luck!

Hey Jenn, I just got back home from Nuit Blanche here in Paris. Used my 50mm too, quite OK but my photos are crap. No chance to take good shots. Too many people, the crowd, the crowd it was crazy!

Have fun!

Thanks guys! I brought all my gear with me, but when we headed out for the night...I took the 50. I got some good shots...but as you said Bugik, there were so many people (estimated over a million showed up through the night) and the light was so low...that not many shots turned out. I was watching some people trying to barrel through the crowd with their tripod and was glad I didn't bother with mine!
Thanks for the advice guys!
Saturdays, Sundays and probably todays posts will be some Toronto shots if your interested :)
