What To Do?

October 6th, 2011
I recently was asked by a friend if I would do her engagement photos. This isn't the first time I have been asked but I usually refuse because I own just an 8MP point and shoot (a Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS to be exact). But, I really would love the opportunity to do something like this.

Has anyone ever done engagement photos or any other professional type photos using just a point and shoot?

Would you recommend it?

If it isn't too crazy of an idea (as I think it might be) how much would you charge?

I did some baby pics with my point and shoot for a friend and they loved the picture. To be honest though I didn't charge them. It was a good learning experience for me so you may want to just offer to do them to see if you like the results and just tell them to please not disclose the fact that you did them free of charge!

Although personally I would not attempt engagement pics with a point and shoot, I do want to say that the more you know your camera, even a point and shoot, the better shots you will get. If you are VERY knowledgeable with your camera and can be comfortable doing it, why not give it a try? Because this is new to you and the experience might be payment enough (while helping you start a portfolio), I would suggest maybe just doing it for her as a friend. She, of course, would be responsible for all costs in printing.

At a recent art show here, the headlining artist was using a Nikon D70, which is 6.1MP. It is all in how well you know your camera.

Just my opinion. Hope that helps.

Equipment is only part of the equation. Your understanding of the equipment you are using helps but most importantly, it is your eye. They asked you because they like your eye. Go for it!

I did some for a friend at no charge, just gave her the low res files....I needed the experience and the shots for my portfolio. I see nothing wrong with freebies for a friend if you can use them for future business! Go for it!

@annaruth Anna try renting a DSLR and F2.8 Zoom Lens, you can charge the costs to your friend, this is an important event and not only will you feel pro but you'll look pro as well, give it a go! =)

@ronphotography Thanks! I actually looked at some rentals. I may just do that.

@mariboo uses a point and shoot and I know she did some great photos for a pet business. I have sold many photos that I took with my elph. Go for it!

I'd be cautious about renting a camera for a photo shoot cos you'll need time to get used to it and the controls. I reckon you could maybe charge something low for the shoot and make sure your friend knows you don't mind if she isn't happy with the results and she's welcome to go to a professional too.

@annaruth As @wormentude said, have enough time to learn how to use the dslr if you plan to pursue renting, good luck and show us some photos later!
