Keeping my camera safe while riding ATV

October 7th, 2011
Hi, I'm going on a day trip tomorrow on an ATV. I've done on hundreds of trips like that one, but I never brought my camera with me. I'm expecting to see bears, deers, moose, and more, so I really want my camera with me. I want to bring my 75-300mm and my 18-55mm lenses with me.

Is it safe to bring those items with me? Is there a danger that the vibration damage my equipment? Does anybody have any tips for me?

Thanks
Eric

If you don't have a camera bag that holds everything tightly in place, I'd say wrap everything up in a towel or two, and tuck it into a backpack. Should be fine like that. I've traveled quite a bit with my equipment in far less secure ways, and everything works still with minimal scuffs.

If cameras and lenses broke that easily, I'd be worried...

I'm assuming you'd want your camera handy for fast access? Like @gurry said, a bag with some towels or other padding should work fine.

@butcher - I've done a lot of MTBiking and Hiking with my gear. On canoe trips and anything involving a lot of water, I use a Lowepro Dryzone pack which is totally waterproof, and the gear inside does not move at all. On my MTB, I use the Lowepro Slingshot for quick easy access, as I can swing it around while it is still strapped on. All my gear has survived pretty well. I find it best to keep your back nice and close to your body to minimise as much movement as possible. And @gurry suggestion is spot on, make sure the gear is packed well and they should handle it ok.

Great advice from those who have already responded, but when on an ATV, there is quite a bit of dust that gets kicked up. Make sure you equipment is well protected from the dust as well! Have fun! Our favorite family vacations involved riding mountain trails on ATVs! I'm jealous I can't go with you!

Cat
Deb is right, it's the dust to worry about the most! I learned the hard way! I take mine with me still but now I take them to our local camera doctor after each trip to be cleaned.... its easy to keep the dust cleaned on the outside of the lens but the inside gets dusty too on atv rides...and after a few trips is when it becomes apparent.
Pretty sure your gear will be fine if protected adequately :)
Have fun on your trip.

A secure pack...pack it out with towels or something if it's not tight. But if I'm passengering I laways actually hold my camera...that was I can move with the movement of the vehicle and be a bit of a shock absorber. So far many, many miles of very rough driving and the only damage has been to me, not to my gear.

Great, thanks for the tips. I'll post a few pics if I get interesting ones.

Thanks,
Eric
