pricing for a family portrait?

October 15th, 2011
I have a family that wants some family portraits. I have no idea of how to price this. Right now I'm not sure how many hours it will be and what they actually want but if you can give me some genreal ideas of what you charge (per hour? per print?)

thanks

I would probably start by googling some photographers in your area, and see if their sites have pricing info. Then I would probably charge a certain percentage of their fees.

I used to have a set fee, that converted to a print credit. It means you get paid your minimum if they stuff you around later and don't order (or take ages to order). I think mine was around $200. I no longer do this, but my client base has a much higher average income these days, and I just charge per print/canvas/album etc, payable when they order (wedding clients pay half before the wedding, as an exception to the rule, because of the extra costs involved).

Oh, a good "rule of thumb" if you go the per-product route, is to charge 5 to10 times your COG for each item. If a print costs you $2, charge $20. If a canvas costs you $100, charge $500. Or at least, work out basics using that and then adjust for saleability - you might increase your prints to 20x and reduce your canvasses to 3x, for example. Remember, if you sell a print for $20, and it costs you $2 to print it, your actual profit is likely around $6 (not $18) once you factor in travel, equipment depreciation, insurance etc. And that's on a good day.
