Sorry for being annoying and posting again...

So, I've finally saved up enough money for a DSLR! :D
Anyway, i was looking at the Nikon D5000...and I think I'm going to go with a Nikon or a Canon...the thing is, I can't find anywhere what the Canon equivelent would be of that Nikon...does anyone know?

Also, I guess I'm just generally looking for opinions, experiences etc. on cameras around the £500 mark (I don't really want to go any higher then that)

So yeah! Ooo, and also, I'm hopefully going to go test some out soon and then find them cheaper online xD

Canon EOS 450D I say - that's what I use. You can get it with kit lens for about this much. Yes the 450D doesn't have HD video - you can get the 500D for that, which is only slightly more - but it has a bigger and much more detailed LCD screen. I think the D5000 also has less lenses to choose from.

The most important thing you can do is play with both, as they both have very different menus. The one that 'feels' the best out of the two I'd go for, as spec-wise they're not that different. But remember; once you've bought a model, you're likely to stick with it for life, as you start purchasing lenses. Because even if you upgrade your camera, you'll want to use the same lenses you've already bought.

As above. I use a Canon EOS 450D and it's been great.

I personally love my Nikon D5000 I have not used a canon besides at the store i just liked the way nikon felt better in my hand. I didn't know much about photography when I purchased so THe lenses weren't a huge issue for me. Though i honestly have not had much trouble finding lenses that will work. I suppose i also live near a camera supply store which helps.

I just went through this about two weeks ago. I purchased my first SLR and could not decide between Nikon or Canon. I priced the lenses that I thought I would use most with each camera, and Canon seems to have a wider variety at lowers costs. You won't save a WHOLE lot going with Canon, but you'll have a wider selection. The Nikon D5000 also seemed much heavier to me and when you are carrying that around, plus lenses and accessories, every little ounce is going to make a difference. I went with Canon and I absolutely love it!!! Good luck in your choice & happy shopping.
P.S. Even if you are just starting out in your DSLR "journey" and are not that concerned about using different lenses, I would still take your lens options and cost into consideration, because trust me from experience - as soon as you figure out your camera functions - you will want different lenses to capture different shots - you are investing in a life long system, so keep that in mind! =)

Ish
Hi Naomi,

I just bought a Nikon D5000 last weekend (End of Financial Year deals are amazing). All I can say is that I'm loving it, I guess my Olympus E420 is getting jealous at the moment. I get excited everytime I have it in my hand.

Love Love Love my D5000. Bought the Canon first actually and sent it back...The focus didn't seem sharp enough... Then tried my friends 5000 and I was sold. But it really is a matter of preference as you can see from the comments above! The canon was just not as intuitive to use (for me!). Try them both and then decide. A tip though -- got my Nikon refurbished from Adorama for the same price as the Canon 450. You would never know it is a refurb and works like a charm...
