How About Them LIGHT Trails

November 13th, 2011
OK, I know, I've been a little obsessed with light trails lately. I mean I shoot one good one, everybody loves it, and then it seems like that is all I can do.

Well, light trails are actually just kinda fun. While I'm standing on rooftops and sidewalks shooting 100-200 photos I don't know what the final product will look like until I get home to edit them together. So it's kinda fun. And it's abstract, if you really think about it. Unless you've had a *lot* to drink or smoking some particular herb I'm pretty sure people don't normally see headlights streaking down streets.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people hate this time of year almost as much as I do. I hate the shorter days, early sunsets, colder temps. A lot of people have been saying they aren't sure what to shoot because the sun sets almost as soon as they are out of work or class.

So this week, starting with last night, I will shoot a different type of night shot each night and post a thread like this the next morning to show you what I got and see who else has something similar. Each night will be something different and all of it related to night photography. Hopefully by the end of the week everyone will have some great ideas and inspiration for night photography.

Oh...and of course even more people will know who I am. And how awesome I am. And will understand how sarcastic I am so when I hijack their thread or photo comments they'll just smile. And cake. There should always be cake.

Show us your light trails. Cars, carnival rides, amusement parks, light paintings. Anything that involves a light source and a long exposure.

Yeah, I've been doing loads lately. Here are three of my light trails, two recent, and one not so recent just to show you what can be done with light trails.

This is the only one I have even tried to shoot (so far!) ... one photo and done through a chain-link fence. I now want to do all kinds of them!

I really enjoy them and have done quite a few...

I stayed in the 26th floor of a hotel in San Francisco a year and a half ago and accidentally got some light trails. Not nearly as long as yours, but I thought they were cool! My "tripod" was an end table stacked on a footstool and I think a book on top of that. hahaha! I'll see if I can find one and post it.
Thanks for the inspiration!
@sburbidge cool idea!

@ymkewjf : I LOVE yours - especially that door with a face is hilarious! Going to fav it now.

I'm still not great with lighttrails, maybe because I don't have a decent tripod...

But I have some dark months ahead to practice...

Not as cool as most but I plan on trying the 2 second compilation very soon

Taken from the same overpass I showed a few days ago in my project (your life outlook @jasonbarnette !)

I like this one because the pavement is so crisp and the dotted dividing line is in there too

I don't have light trails in this one (there was only foot traffic here since it IS a foot bridge), but I tried to catch some moving traffic in the background. Not much luck there, but considering this was my first serious attempt at a night shot, I thought it turned out pretty well. I'd like to share my photo here anyway if that's ok.
