Camera protection plans?

June 23rd, 2010
I am looking into purchasing a camera and several lenses from B & H photo however I recently found out that they do not offer protection plans in my state. My total purchase will be QUITE expensive and I am a bit concerned with only having the manufacture warranty. I plan on adding my purchases to my home owners insurance, so my question is do I really need the protection plans as well?

I've spent a small fortune on professional camera insurance over the last 12 years but I had to have it because working out on the road with the possibility of anything happening.
I did drop the entire bag of camera's and lenses because I didnt zip the bag up once. However, although it cost a lot for the insurance company to fix & replace (and then they tried to add 50% to my monthly DD because I had the cheek to make a claim!)
- it was no-where near what I paid over the years - I would've been better to have put that money in the bank and I still would have enough to go on holiday with as well as buy a whole new camera kit! Hindsight is a wonderful thing..

If you dont leave your camera in the car, dont have butterfingers (!) and dont take photo's where you're hanging off a cliff or neck deep in water he he, then I think home insurance might be enough? Just make sure you know what it covers when you are out and about. Example, even though I paid silly money, my camera was still not insured in the car at night, even though sometimes I had to work nights.
Also, if you do leave kit in the car, try and make sure nobody see's you, I know of 5 other snappers who did that, went to get a coffee, to come back to find car broken into...
