Composition Challenge

February 5th, 2012
Something I find in my own photography is that I almost exclusively shoot horizontally/landscape, and never vertically/portrait, I always find it suits my style and is easier for me to get a good shot. So this week I'm shooting only portrait style, I thought it would be a good challenge for other people too, to only shoot one way or the other.

Anyone up for the challenge?

I'm doing the whole year using neither! Or, I'm cropping every single photo to a square composition, LOL :)

@snippets Wow, that is commitment, I'm going to have to keep an eye on you!

Yes, I hope I don't end up regretting it because it's more limiting that way.... I guess we'll see!

I'm doing some similar through out this month. I sort of got caught up on posing/setting up shots. So getting back more to my candid roots.

I make it a rule to ALWAYS shoot in landscape. You can crop landscape to portrait but almost impossible the other way around. Have fun and I'll keep an eye on the result.
@snippets
Allison, I've been cropping to square to more easily fit with thumbnails. Not exclusively so.

A few years ago I started shooting the majority of my portraits in landscape orientation as an exercise. In the end, it kind-of stuck, and now I find I shoot around three-quarters of my client portraits that way. It certainly suits my style of shooting. Definitely a challenge I recommend, if for nothing else than to make one look at things a bit differently.

I have the opposite problem of always wanting to shoot in portrait! Maybe I will try only landscape for the week.

For me, it really depends on what lens I'm using and how much room I have. I tend to shoot landscapes and scenes in Landscape mode (LOL) and people, I tend to do portrait mode when inside. Funny, huh?! But I think I tend to favor landscape the most.
