I dropped my camera on the floor last night, not from a great height, but now my lense won't focus properly and when I take a pic, it comes up as just blank grey on my screen. Anyone know what the problem is? Or how to help, it's a canon eos 400D. Won't be able to take any pics for 365 until it's fixed. I want to cry.
Sounds like your mirror and/or sensor have been knocked out of alignment. I would send it Canon if you are able - should not be too expensive (but call them first to check). There is usually no DIY or easy-fix for impact damage issues, but they are often a simple fix for technicians.
Worst comes to worst, it could be a great excuse to upgrade. :)
@kmackenzie I unfortunately only have one lense, so I don't know, but I think it is a lense problem, as it wont focus.
@jinximages I wish I had the money to upgrade :( I've only had this since may and bought it off a friend. I'm going to take it to the camera shope tmrw x
Make sure you take it to a Canon authorised repair place, then it won't void any warantees or anything. Plus you'll know you're getting the parts designed for your camera. Really sucks that it's poorly though. Hope you can get it fixed.
@hammster I took it off my camera if that's what you mean Mike, I'm a novice when it comes to messing around and am afraid to mess with internals, I tried to unscre to see if anything was lose, but the screws were too tight x
Yeah, Gemma. Just to see if you could remove and put it back on without any fit problems. Not to take the camera apart or anything like that. Also, if the lens is put back onto the camera, did everything work? Or still not working right. If you know someone with a similar camera, you could try the lens on their camera and that would help determine if the lens has a problem or if it's just the camera body.
oh gemma, i feel awful for you. i have the same Camara and i dropped it once, but lucky it was ok, but i was sick with worry, and my heart jumped with fear.I hope it is not to bad.
I had the same thing happen after dropping my canon. I took off the lens and the mirror plates swing and when I had dropped it it had popped one of the mirror plates out on its hinge and that was blocking the view through the camera. Check that real quick before deciding to send it in or not, check the placement of the mirrors. I think it is that they pop up...oh geez I can't remember how exactly they moved, but they did and all I had to do was move them back into place. I hope that helps. My canon is now completely gone it reads error 99 and I guess I have to send it in and it cost anywhere from $50 to $600 or more, and I am not very happy with that because I love my Canon. We don't really have the $$ if it costs a lot to fix though. Thankfully though, I do have a pocket point and shoot camera, which is always irritating me cuz it doesn't do what I want it do since everything is auto.
It's fixed guys!! The lovely lad in the camera shop did it for free :) Apparently i'd knocked my mirror and it wasn't moving with the shutter, it was a tad dirty aswell, but he said the gears in my lense are a bit shot now and won't last very long, good job I'm asking for a lense for crimbo eh!!! Thanks so much for your help xxxxxxx

Will you get your new lens from them?
