Ways to make best use of TIME on 365

January 17th, 2011
@Scrivna Having run a thread on how much time people spend on here, I discovered I am not alone in whiling away hours each day. Whilst I recognise there are things I can do, it would be great if the time could be reduced on some of the functions here.
1 It would be brilliant to return from comments to the next pic on the home page.
2 When it comes to acknowledging comments, a control button held while clicking on each of the replies would dramatically cut that time.
3 I know Spaceman hates the idea, and I did too, but perhaps the equivalent of a "like" button by another name would help. People can opt to use it or not as leaving a comment clearly means that others can choose to check out their work but some people don't want even more followers but might like to let the person know their pic is good when they don't have the time to say why. It might be preferable to 'nice pic'!

The additional time created can then either be focussed on exploring more of 365 or we can go to bed earlier!!

Obviously there are ways to cut down time just in the way we interact with each other and I have to do so for health reasons, but it seems a shame that in doing so I will lose more productive time on 365, both in terms of the learning and the lovely interaction built up due to mechanics. Equally, I realise that some of those physically can't be changed. However, really happy if there is anything that you can do to cut the time spent on the processes so we can concentrate on the substance of what 365 is about.

I would love to know what you and others think. It's not a complaint at all but just a query as to whether something might be done and whether there is wider support for reducing time on getting to and from the lovely 365ers work and interacting with and responding to them.

Oh, and can you set up a 365 Anonymous for when it becomes a serious addiction? LOL!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this brilliant site. It seems to attract a wonderful group of people for whom mutual support seems to be a key value.

I agree with the not flipping back to the top of the home page every time. I am finding that as i have less time to look at my following pages there are quite often 4 or 5 pages worth of shots to look at. Scrolling up and down is a tad frustrating! it'd be nice to think i could maximise my time making constructive comments and letting people know I think their work is great rather than not having the energy to keep flicking through the home page and missing stuff.

I certainly agree with No. 1 in Miranda's suggestions. It would mean that more of us would click on the full view of the shots rather than just working from the home page as some do. The repeated scrolling down is frustrating and also makes me hesitate to follow new people sometimes because of the added time involved in repeatedly scrolling down the home page. No. 2 is a good suggestion, also for saving of time reasons.

Hey Miranda :)

Yep,I totally agree with no.1 and 2.

...but I think no.3 would be a step closer to "365" becoming Facebook.I hate Facebook.

Great ideas! I like #1 and #2.... but #3 I can't say I agree with. 365 already tallies our views. I see that working in the same way a "like" button would. Someone viewed your photo but wasn't intrigued enough to comment. A "like" button would take a step in the impersonal direction. And that, like @spaceman said, is way too much like FB for my taste. LoL
January 17th, 2011
@bethanyjay @spaceman I kind of agree to, which is why I have suggested if there might be something similar rather than the same. I shouldn't have really called it a "like" button. I don't see 'views' as a like, in fact the opposite can be true, that once they looked they didn't like it enough to say otherwise, or who 'couldn't be bothered to comment'. Of that number I think there are those who like but don't know how to say it in the way that the more verbose of us might feel easier doing. Anyway, I think the first two are the more important too, and there is that danger of changing the ethos of 365 too.

I would LOVE to see #1 & #2 implemented and #3 is ok too as long as it's just an option and not a replacement for comments. It is especially time-consuming when scrolling from the home page and having to start at the beginning everytime you click on one to comment. Somedays there is just not that much time available for commenting so anything to make the most efficient use of that time would be greatly appreciated.

i would like when you click on your followers, if it would show you if they are following you back or not.

i'd also love an option to "hide" some people rather than unfollow them. or create a list of people that i can be more specific to show up in my feed.

i guess alot like twitter...

and a like button would be awesome.

Someone addressed #1 awhile back and the solution a lot of people came up with was to right click on the photo and click open link in new tab. That way, the page you were on stays right there where you were. It works well for me.
January 17th, 2011
@jennarichards that is sooooo helpful. I will try that. however, unless it happens automatically, 1000s will go on getting caught in the time-consuming loop . If that is not possible then a note to the effect of what you are saying might be made on the homepage ....or some form of alert
January 17th, 2011
@miranda Once I realized I could do that, I would scroll down my home page and open links as I was going. By the time I was done, I would have soooo many pages open. It would still take forever to go through and comment on them all.

Here's one thing I have done to reduce time - I've gone to 'notifications' on my project and adjusted the emails coming in. That way I can not get tempted and I can do a once a day visit to 365 (oh yeah!) and use the notifications here to check if there is anyone I need to respond to.

You can also open a link in a new tab by clicking with the scroll wheel on most mice. Saves even more time that way. :-)

I agree with the not flipping back to the top of the home page every time.

A little usability testing goes a long way.

Just tried Jenna's hint and it works very well. I just made sure to comment on each one as I opened it, then closed the new window so I wouldn't have them all open at the one time. It's much quicker and it encourages you to open each picture rather than commenting on the thumbnails in the home page, which is a temptation sometimes when you're running out of time.

I am one falling into the 'heavy usage' group on 365. It's a fun site and being hooked on photography too it works very well. The 'servicing time' is now getting huge and anything to streamline it would be welcome.

I tend to go down the list to the shot I last commented upon then work my way up the line creating a new tab with each one I wish to comment upon, assembling them in groups of a dozen or so. Then view each in full and comment.

Miranda's suggestions are well thought out (wow, that sounded pompous - sorry, not meant to). So how do I vote? Number 1 really does the same as my current method of viewing, Number 2 is great - do it now as far as I'm concerned and number three has a function; as opposed to the viewing figures I would know how many 'approved' of the image rather than just passed by.

Very constructive thread...some good ideas.

Love all these ideas
January 19th, 2011
@Scrivna Hi Ross. I would love to know what you think of some of the suggestions here - all intended to be very constructive.
January 19th, 2011
@miranda hey, only just seen this thread

#1 is easily solved by opening in a new tab, but I see the frustration, defaulting them to open in new tabs would be possible, but is likely to annoy people who do not want them to open in new tabs. I'll put this on my list of improvements.

#2 what do you mean by "acknowledging comments"? Is this in reference to notifications??

#3 +Fav or comment, if we add "like" buttons people will soon want "dislike", "mediocre", "yet another puppy shot" buttons. I'm sure people would rather have 5 thoughtful constructive comments than 100 "likes" I don't think it's conductive to growth as a photographer, which this site is all about.

Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming :-)

Thanks Ross.

Re No. 2. I didn't word this very well. It isn't just acknowledging/thanking people. It is also responding to their comments that they leave on your page. At the moment the only way I know how to do it is to work you way through one comment at a time and click on reply and then scroll back up to the next one and so on. That can take ages. If one could just, say, start at the top and hold 'control' down while clicking on all the respondents you wanted to reply to that would be just fab.

Re No 3, I dont' like the idea of a 'like' button either, and was thinking of a more acceptable adaptation of that concept, something that would overcome some of what you are saying. Also, the reality is, like now there are tonnes of newbies who you want to encourage, but just don't have the time unless you don't do paid work. And then there are those right at the beginning of their photography where it simply isn't always easy to find something you can usefully say in the spirit of this site but you want to encourage them - it's awful when you open up and there are no comments in their early weeks. I know what you are saying and it sounds like even an adapted version would go against the values/grain of what this site is about.

thanks for responding.

I LIKE the LIKE Idea....short and sweet in some cases. But then someone would see "viewed by 30" and then no LIKE...that would be a bummer. At least with out it ,one could assume that some did like it but had no time to comment. ")

I am glad I have found this post because I was beginning to wonder if I was the only person that had a job and a family that took up most of my day. I have been trying to reply to comments and venture into the site more but haven't done so yet. My time at the moment only allows for a pic to be taken somewhere during the day and for it to be uploaded before I go to bed. What the site has done though, is proved that I can find the time at least to take my camera with me and shoot something that I see during the day whereas I didn't before. I often wonder, do people just use pictures that they have taken in the past or are all the shots actually taken each day?
January 20th, 2011
@topaz Hi Tony. I have got two albums. On is for the pat (365) and the other (pomegranite) is for the 'daily' shots. For me, this has to be as near as. Others are much better at the daily thing. I do my best. There have been countless discussions on this and there are probably just as many that do it like this as stick to the daily pics. As they say "it's your project". Sounds like you are doing brilliantly.
