Artist Challenge-Robert Mapplethorpe

Before joining this group, if someone asked me to name a photographer the first name to pop into my head would have been Robert Mapplethorpe. I became aware of him during the 80s when his controversial homoerotic images were the center of the culture wars. But, he was much more than a photographer of the gay S&M world. Mapplethorpe was also known for his still life photography and his portraits. He studied drawing, painting, and sculpture at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Some of his images call to mind classical Greek sculpture. While living with Patti Smith in the 1960s, he bought a Polaroid and his photographic journey began.
