Theme ideas

December 3rd, 2011
I want to start my very first 365 project but am not sure about what kind of theme / themes to do. Is it best to stick to a singular theme, or make a different theme each day / week? Thoughts?

It is your project Matt so you can do whatever you want. Most people don't have a theme at all, they just take a photo of anything every day. Others do themes that last a week or a month. There are often people who come up with a theme and they talk about it in the 'latest topics' and others join in with them. There are often themes and competitions running, which usually last a week each time, and you can participate in those.
You see the possibilities are endless. Welcome and have fun.

@100summits Hey Matt! I'm about to finish my first year in the next week. I have found that it's really fun to try to do a theme for a week or month (whether your idea or something that another member "challenges" other members to participate in), and also participate in the weekly themes that you can find on the sidebar under "Weekly Theme" that are posted by Ross. Like @kjarn said, it's your project, and you can do whatever you want. I think the only actual "theme" I've seen someone do for a whole project is the general "self portrait" album. Have fun and welcome! :)

@100summits Matt the thing I have found out about this project is that it is very personal. Follow the weekly theme challenge if yoiu want. Join in on a challenge that someone else may suggest. But the best advice I can give you is follow your onw instincts. Follow your heart

I think most people start out doing a photo a dayand soon discover they need inspiration/ ideas. Themes can help with the inevitable creativity blocks. Themes can also be ways to challange oneself to grow as a photographer. I've seen many people takes the weekly challenges or monthly themes as a way to stretch themselves outside their comfort zone. There are, of course, a few of those who choose a theme as the basis for their entire year.

@f365 Angelina chose to do a self portrait a day:

As already mentioned, there are weekly themes, competitions and othe posts people put up and you can join any of these. I have been doing weekly themes for my 365, as it helps keep up, but sometimes i go off these if i find something interesting to photograph. I will warn you - the first couple of weeks are hard, and at many times throughout your 365, you will want to give up, but if you keep going you get a tremendous amount of feeling of success at the end, and tonnes of support from the 365 community. So good luck, you will enjoy it :)

in my second year and a theme for a year is very hard.. you will find that you will need to swap it up , just so you dont go brain dead.... although some people do a year long theme and get through and I applaud them,, but I know I couldnt do it.. so saying that.. I take photos of really just about anything...
oh and welcome..

Matt. I sometimes like to work on a weekly theme because almost anything longer keeps me from trying new things or going different directions. I used this project as one of the best learning tools for photography. Why make so many rules before you even get started. See how it goes and then decide your direction.
