RAW

So what exactly is RAW? And do I need a special program for my canon powershot g12 in order to upload the RAW photos onto my computer? Because I can't seem to upload them unless I use iPhoto. And I believe iPhoto changes the extension.

the only way to shoot:)

I upload from my camera into iPhoto all the time. I then export the original so I can manipulate it in PhotoShop Elements.

@webfoot - I don't get what you're saying. Is there some reason you don't just upload into PSE Organizer?
January 17th, 2012
@reba Probably because I started out with iPhoto, then got PSE later. Old habits I guess.

Totally agree with Liz (@fotomama).... RAW is the only way to go and take the leap you'll never turn back.....

@webfoot - thanks Paul, I understand; I thought maybe you were saying something more than that. I tend to do just the opposite - upload to PSE - make whatever mods I'm going to make there then save one copy as a jpeg in my iPhoto 365 file. I do love photographing in RAW though - it's made a big difference for the quality of my photos I think.

@reba Well I guess since I don't own photoshop it wouldn't make much of a difference?

@lovebrittany Wrong! I don't have Photoshop, but have two free programmes instead - one called Gimp that is very like photoshop and a plug in for it called UFRaw, which are what I use for editing. The advice I have is that if you're just starting to experiment, then set your camera to shoot "RAW + JPEG" if you can.

I found this yesterday and it has given me the best explanation of the pro's and con's of both Raw and Jpeg.

@pete21 Thanks for that Peter, I just had a good read and tomorrow I'll reset my camera and give Raw a go :)

@lovebrittany - I don't know which other apps can process RAW. If you're interested, it may be worth a search to see if there's something free, affordable, more user friendly (whatever would matter most to you). You can get great photos without it - so don't be discouraged. It's like saying you can't get a good photo with an inexpensive camera - not true. I had PSE (the much, much cheaper version of photoshop btw) and borrowed a friend's cam with RAW setting. I haven't given it back and that seems fine with her.

@lovebrittany P.S. - looked at your photos - you're only 20 or so in and they look interesting to me. Following.
