I was just reading a commment on here (cannot remember by whom) the other day about Nikon's in-camera noise reduction being far superior to Canon's. I'm a Canon girl myself, so that may be blasphemous for me to say, but I'm just passing along some info I came across on here....
@kaseycarroll I use a Canon 1000D, which I'm currently looking to upgrade. But yes, I've definitely come across that issue during night shoots, etc. But perhaps an upgrade will solve that for me?
why are you thinking of changing, just because of the digital noise factor? what kind of settings are you using where you are experiencing the noise? ISO settings usually cause this problem.
One thing that has helped me out (got this tip from another forum) is to slightly over expose (by 1 stop or 2 - WATCH your histogram so you don't blow the highlights!) when shooting at a high ISO and it really does help to get rid of noise. If you even slightly underexpose at a high ISO, you will see a lot of noise. This will help no matter what kind of camera you have.
I have heard that Nikon does do much better at higher ISO's. But I'm a Canon girl and I'm going to stick Canon (Cause I can not imagine starting ALL over again with lenses, accessories!)
@kaseycarroll so far as i know, in the tests done by dpreview, their ISO results are pretty much the same, they vary some features here and there, but mostly the same result. What counts most is the camera you know how to use. I mean really knowing how to operate, for instance, being able to config the camera in the dark... I have a Canon 600D and i love it.
Great discussion topic. I'm upgrading to from a 2003 canon powershot g5 to a canon 550d in April (can't wait!) so the advice on here was really useful thanks guys. Also I'm lucky enough to have the use of a canon 40d for a couple of days so I'v been able to play about using the tips posted on here.
