Advice in re: batteries?

November 23rd, 2010
Hi everybody,

I'm pretty new so I'm just now noticing I'm going through a lot more batteries than when I wasn't using my camera every day. I'm wondering: are rechargeable batteries worth the hassle? Or are there certain brands of batteries that just last longer than others? What do you use?

Thank you!

I have two rechargeables so I always have one in reserve . . . but I find they last a pretty long time anyway!

Rechargeable batteries are fine as long as you get some with a high mAh - the higher the better, as they'll last longer. Unfortunately that means they'll cost more too, but it's worth it.

Rechargeable batteries are a must! Its worth it because one there is less to have to recycle and two you will save a lot of money. Particularly if your camera you are using the screen rather than your view finder to take pictures with. Using the screen and the flash suck the life out of the batteries very fast. Get the rechargeable you will be glad you did.

@hopeless re: battery life . . . I did not know that . . . I almost always use the view finder over screen unless I'm photographing some part of myself and am not enough of a contortionist to get the right angle! No wonder my batteries last awhile . . . love learning something new!

these are my fav:

I find they work really well... no memory, lots of shoots, ect...

I know this isn't really in the cards seeing how you already have a camera, but when I go to buy a digital I always pay that little bit extra more to get one with a lithium battery and a charger.

These giant batteries that come with the camera last for the duration of the life and it usually costs about $200 more to get a camera with that battery and charger... but it's so much cheaper in the end and easier than dealing with the bought batteries or the small rechargeable ones you get in shops.

You can get all zoom happy with it too and press as many buttons as you like because all you have to do is recharge it again - rather than replacing it!

I use Powerex 2700 AA batteries and they last for ages. I much prefer those to the lithium battery in my P&S which doesn't last anywhere near as long.

i 2nd Jordan, eneloops are the way to go, now memory, quick to recycle (if using in flash) and aparently last over 1500 recharges, I use these for my flash, although for camera i prefer to buy ones that use lithium batteries.

I use lithium AAs - had my current set since August and I pretty much use my camera nearly every day. I get the lifeage out of them by a) turning the screen off altogether - I set it so it will only show the picture I've just taken for three seconds before going blank. b) Not using the flash at all (onboard ones are a bit phooey anyway - if you want a good shot in the dark use a tripod or buy a proper hot shoe flash with its own batteries) and c) Not using the majority of the automatic functions/in-camera editing abilities of my camera because I shoot in full manual mode.

But that's just me being a total cheapskate XD That aside, I'd recommend those eneloops too, the reason being they recharge more fully and are good for flash photography. Except I was a moron and didn't realise they were rechargeable and threw mine away after they ran out T____T I am a cheapskate to make up for being a spack in other ways!

Wow--thanks for sharing your advice & expertise everybody! I've stopped using my screen from now on & I'm buying those eneloops tomorrow. What a great community (o:
