Any tips for Portraits?

January 31st, 2011
My thing, I decided, is portraits. So far it's going good. The thing I wanna know, is any cool ideas for portraits that I could use? I have a crappy Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0

I know, I know--crappy! But I'm not allowed to get another one unless I can pay for it and the thing is...I'm broke O.o

SO, is there anything on Photoshop 4.0 I can use that could help my edits for portraits?

I have found you tube amazing for tutorials especially when coming to tweaking your portrait shots and also doing the sitting in a way that not much tweaking is required

The best advise I can give you on doing portraits is to talk to your subject, joke around and don't really let them know when you are going to shoot. People get very stiff when they know you are going to take the pic. They get all posey and it does not look natural. I usually let them know take a few so they get it out of their system then I say "just relax while I test the light" They have no idea what I mean and I shoot away. ( out of 10 time they love the shots that I got of them off guard. Also if your photographing kids never ever tell them to smile and look at you. Tell them a joke or say something silly and they will laugh and then shoot. When kid trys to smile it looks horrible. So I'd say the single best advise I can give you is get them off guard.

The sharpest focus should always be on the eyes.

@silverhorn: thanks!! I'll go lurk youtube :)

@angelica: that is some EXCEPTIONAL advice!! I'll have to try that when I do that tomorrow, for my third shot! :D thanks so much!

@cdford: the eyes, the eyes...I'll have to remember that :)

@tatiradujkovic What angelica said is brilliant, all the subjects I get the chance to know I do...

As for PS - Curves tool, play with the channels individually and the way curves affect an image, don't be afraid of going loopy with it, when it goes wrong you can reset or just hit cancel and start again...

If you are doing children this book is pretty good. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1231&bih=592&q=photographing+children+%26+babies&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=4453162590510275573&ei=1yRGTZTqHoSdlgeVkrwB&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CHAQ8wIwAg#

Also, surf flickr.com for posing ideas. You'll see 1000's of amazing pictures and it will give you ideas on what poses look good for what you want to achieve.

@tatiradujkovic Here's a photo with and without some curves play - it's from my phone, it got cropped too and I've tried to be as close as I can with crop just one notion, think I gave reds a really weird violent up and down curve, blues got a strange one and greens got a general boost, however that might not be right, I didn't save a PSD

@killerjackalope woops, crops further off than I thought - forgot about cutting the top down too...

I'm a big believer in the eyes being the focus of an individual portrait but then I am a big "eye" person ... easy to tell by the photos I have done.
