A lady from my church has asked me to photograph herself as an expectant mother, along with her 1 year old son. Any ideas as to how to shoot? I dont have a studio or any equipment, i was thinking to do some of the typical back-lit shadowy photos, like a silh
I am guessing you were going to put silhouette. The way to do those (as I am to understand) is put the light behind the subject. I think you can do it with anything... have her go outside, the sun would probably work, and she would probably like how the outdoorsyness looks.
You don't need anything too fancy for simple shots, but movable light sources, like a lamp with a goose neck and a good full spectrum white light bulb can help dramatically, with some fill flash from the camera you can make very usable, soft images...
I would think you'd want your lens fairly wide open, people want a softer dreamy look, and remember things like her hands on her belly, or gazzing down at the bump. Two thumbs together with index fingures touching pointed down makes a nice heart shape on the belly, with maybe the one year old's hands in there for fun too...
The other nice thing about no flash and kids, you are less likely to get a crying kid from the flash...
Do a search on flickr for ideas - then think about how you would need your lighting. I suggest buying a reflector - cheap and can be very effective. Then you can use natural light and use the reflector to fill in any shadows.
Alternatively, if you have a flash unit you can shoot in a room and point the flash to the ceiling or a facing wall for a softer look. Good luck!
I love doing maternity photos, I've done several shoots, I just started on here but you can check out my website, I have tons of photos on there www.zenfolio.com/tinaru1
